With the approval of the Graduate School of Nankai University, the School of Foreign Languages will begin admitting master’s students in German Language and Literature in 2027. The program will take German language and literature as its core and German studies as its application, focusing on the distinctive field of German industrial and technological culture. It aims to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talents who “understand German, know Germany, can translate, and are capable of research.”

The program currently has 11 full-time faculty members, including two Nankai “Baijing Scholars.” They specialize in German literature, German linguistics, translation studies, and German studies, with diverse academic backgrounds, strong scholarly expertise, and fruitful research achievements. In addition, several German experts are employed year-round to participate in teaching and research.

German Department at Nankai University traces its origins to the “German Literature Division” established in 1919, making Nankai one of the earliest universities in China to train German majors. It has a long disciplinary tradition and profound academic heritage. At present, it maintains long-term and stable cooperation with renowned universities in German-speaking countries, including Heidelberg University, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Technische Universität Berlin, the University of Münster, and Friedrich Schiller University Jena, conducting teaching and academic exchanges. In recent years, it has also vigorously promoted Sino-German dual-degree and joint training programs, helping every Nankai German student achieve their potential and create their future.
