From October 25 to 26, 2025, the 2025 National Russian Language Competition for Chinese University Students (Всекитайский Конкурс по Русскому Языку), hosted by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education and organized by Dalian University of Foreign Languages, was successfully held at the Lvshun Campus of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. In this year’s competition, Li Qianming, a 2025 master’s student majoring in Russian Language and Literature from the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) at Nankai University, won second prize in the postgraduate category.

The National Russian Language Competition for Chinese University Students serves as an important platform for promoting Russian language education and selecting talented Russian-language professionals in the context of deepening cultural exchanges between China and Russia. All prize winners are eligible for funding from the China Scholarship Council to pursue further studies or academic degrees in Russia. The competition consists of three levels, which are for lower-division undergraduate, upper-division undergraduate, and postgraduate respectively, and includes three stages: the preliminary round (online), the semi-final, and the final (both offline). This year, more than 410 students from over 160 universities across China participated in the preliminary rounds of the three levels.

The preliminary round of the postgraduate category included tasks such as vocabulary and grammar, cloze tests, knowledge of Russian national conditions, Russian–Chinese translation, structural completion, and writing, comprehensively assessing participants’ proficiency in the Russian language as well as their understanding of Russian culture and society. After the preliminary round, Li Qianming advanced to the semi-final with the second-highest score, joining twelve other contestants in the postgraduate category. The semi-final and final rounds featured prepared speeches, oral presentations, and dialogue interpreting, laying particular emphasis on contestants’ pronunciation, adaptability, translation skills, and ability to present Chinese stories effectively in Russian. Li delivered an outstanding performance throughout the competition, advancing to the final with the top score in the semi-final and ultimately securing second place in the postgraduate category—just one point behind the champion.

Li Qianming’s excellent achievement is the result of his diligent preparation and dedicated effort, as well as the strong support and careful guidance of faculty members from the SFS. The School attached great importance to the competition and began organizing preparation efforts as soon as the competition announcement was released. Professors Wang Lidan and Asso. Professor Huang Mingtuo from the Department of Russian Studies served as faculty advisors, regularly conducting targeted training sessions for each stage of the competition and providing professional guidance to participating students. In addition, Russian instructor Анастасия Алексеевна contributed to the training for the prepared speech segment. Under the guidance of Prof. Huang Mingtuo, Li Qianming achieved this outstanding result after intense competition. His performance not only demonstrates his strong overall command of the Russian language but also reflects the high quality and academic excellence of Russian-language teaching at the SFS.
