Tianjin Municipal Education Commission announced the final evaluation results of the Tianjin Higher Education Undergraduate Teaching Quality and Teaching Reform Research Project. The project “Construction and Practice System of Ideological and Political Education in College English Curriculum to Cultivate the Ability to Tell China’s Stories Well in English” led by the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors of the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) has been awarded “Outstanding Conclusion” after rigorous assessment through multiple stages, including university preliminary evaluation, municipal evaluation, and expert defense.
As a key initiative in Nankai University’s “Excellence in English” teaching reform, the project, since its inception in 2023, has consistently focused on the core objective of “deeply integrating ideological and political education in curriculum with language instruction.” By prioritizing the cultivation of the ability to tell China’s stories well in English, it has systematically constructed a multidimensional, synergistic, and continuously innovative pedagogical ecosystem for ideological and political education in curriculum. This system encompasses all educational elements, including teaching objectives, evaluation standards, curriculum frameworks, textbook systems, teaching models, micro-majors, competition platforms, teaching teams, and scientific research. The project has completed 12 national, provincial, ministerial and university-level achievements related to the ideological and political education in curriculum; published 2 textbooks of ideological and political education in curriculum; completed 2 talent training programs. Two teaching quality standards: Nankai University Excellent Oral English Ability Standard and Nankai University Excellent English Writing Ability Standard, were also issued. Students were instructed to participate in high-level foreign language subject competitions, such as the “Understanding Contemporary China” National College Foreign Language Contest, and won 19 national awards and more than 30 provincial and ministerial awards. These achievements significantly enhanced the practical depth and educational impact of college English courses, cultivated a group of international communication talents capable and willing to effectively tell China’s stories well in English, and provided replicable innovative models and exemplary experience for the nationwide reform of ideological and political education in college English curriculum.
Only 30 projects in Tianjin have been awarded “Outstanding Conclusion” in this final evaluation. Nankai University had three projects selected, with this project being the university’s only “General” category project to receive an honor.
