During October 25 to 27, 2024, the Sasakawa Cup National University Japanese Knowledge Competition was successfully held at Zhejiang University. Jointly organized by the Japan Science Society and Zhejiang University, the event attracted over 400 competitors from more than 100 universities across the country, showcasing fierce competition.
Representing the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) at Nankai University, a team composed of Jia Xinyi, a student of Japanese Department from the class of 2021, along with Zhang Yixin and Liu Yize from the class of 2020 won the third prize in the team category. Jia Xinyi further distinguished herself by clinching the Grand Prize in the individual category through outstanding performance. Their mentor, Dr Yu Jun, received the Outstanding Team Mentor Award as well as the Individual Champion Mentor Award, marking a perfect conclusion to the competition.
Since its establishment in 2004, the Sasakawa Cup, officially renamed “National University Japanese Knowledge Competition” in 2011, has become renowned for its breadth and depth. The competition encompasses comprehensive assessments of language proficiency, humanities knowledge, and analytical and critical thinking abilities, earning the reputation of the ultimate test for Japanese language learners.
The competition featured both team and individual events. Nankai University's team demonstrated exceptional skills, securing third place with remarkable responses. In individual events, Jia Xinyi advanced through rigorous rounds, including written tests and live question-and-answer sessions, standing out among numerous competitors to reach the finals. In the decisive quick-response round, her swift thinking and superior answering skills allowed her to lead decisively in points, eventually earning the Grand Prize. As the individual champion, Jia Xinyi has been invited to an 8-day visit and exchange program in Japan scheduled for February 2025.
