A delegation of the Universidad de Lleida (University of Lleida, Spain) paid Nankai University a visit on September 26th, 2024. Professor Yan Guodong, Dean of the School of Foreign Studies (SFS), and teachers from the Spanish Department received them at SFS.
Following the welcome ceremony, a special lecture titled "Spanish in Spain and Latin America" was delivered by Professor María Ángeles Calero Fernández of the Facultad de Letras (Faculty of Arts), Universidad de Lleida. Dr. Mi Tian, Venezuelan foreign teacher Franco Raydis and all students of the Spanish Department attended. This lecture comprehensively discussed the evolution of Spanish and analyzed in detail the diversity of dialects in various parts of Spain and the differences in Spanish between Spain and Latin America.
Professor Fernández pointed out that the evolution of language is a dynamic process, which is influenced by historical, geographical, cultural and social factors. Although different dialects can be understood among each other, their forms of expression may also show significant differences. Foreign languages such as Latin and Arabic have jointly shaped this language as the basis of modern Spanish, Professor Fernández said.
At the climax of the lecture, Professor Fernández turned to Spanish in Latin America. She explained how Andalusian dialects, nautical terms, native Indian languages and African languages have influenced modern Spanish. She also showed the distinctive pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions of Spanish in different parts of Latin America. On this basis, she explained the division of Latin American dialects.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Fernández answered questions from students, encouraged them to understand and respect the diversity of languages, and explore the relationship between culture and society behind language phenomena.
In addition to demonstrating the unity and diversity of Spanish as a universal language, this lecture deepened students' comprehension of Spanish, stimulated their enthusiasm for language learning and cultural exploration, and promoted intercultural interactions between China and Spain.
