Huang Yulong, President of the CICG Academy of Translation and Interpretation (CICGATI) and Vice President and Legal Representative of the Translators Association of China (TAC), led a delegation to the School of Foreign Studies (SFS) at Nankai University for a research visit, with Zhang Yaming, Director of the Translation Research Department and Translation Experts Office of the CICGATI, and Li Sha, an officer from the Translation Experts Office. The reception at Nankai University was led by Professor Yan Guodong, President of the SFS, along with Vice-Presidents Professor Ma Hongqi and Professor Li Min, Professor Zhang Zhizhong, Dean of the Department of Translation, Professor Han Lihong, Dean of the Japanese Department, Professor Wang Lidan, Dean of the Russian Department, and Associate Professor Li Chunjiang, Associate Head of the Department of Translation.
Huang Yulong extended his gratitude on behalf of the CICGATI and the Translators Association of China for the outstanding contributions Nankai University's SFS has made to foreign language education and translation in China. He also provided an in-depth introduction to the mission and responsibilities of the CICGATI, which focuses on serving the nation's high-level foreign translation needs and advancing international communication. Huang highlighted the Institute's commitment to innovation and actively promoting translation and public outreach efforts.
Professor Yan Guodong warmly welcomed Huang and the delegation, expressing sincere appreciation for CICGATI’s guidance, support, and recognition. He emphasized the importance Nankai University places on collaboration with the CICGATI and expressed the hope that this visit would further deepen their partnership. Subsequently, Professor Ma Hongqi, Professor Zhang Zhizhong, Professor Han Lihong, Professor Wang Lidan, and Professor Li Chunjiang reported their areas of work respectively.
Following the discussion, Huang Yulong delivered a lecture titled “Practical Approaches to International Communication in the New Era.” He emphasized that China's efforts in international communication must evolve from mere publicity to diversified international communication, and eventually towards interactive exchange. Huang underscored the significance of foreign language proficiency, professional expertise, and deep cultural understanding as key elements for success. Taking the successful European tour of Jiangxi’s tea-picking opera as an example, he illustrated the consequence of dynamic international communication.
Huang stressed the need for a balanced approach in international communication, warning against arrogance as well as inferiority. He advocated for a comprehensive understanding of both domestic conditions and global developments, enabling cultural exchange and mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world. Only by doing so, he asserted, can China’s story be effectively conveyed, and its true image accurately portrayed to the global audience.
The lecture provided valuable insights for both faculty and students, offering new perspectives for SFS's teaching and research in translation and international communication. The SFS at Nankai University reaffirmed its commitment to openness and collaboration, aiming to foster more talents with a global outlook and cross-cultural communication skills through strengthened partnerships with domestic and international peers.
