On the afternoon of August 25, 2024, the 2024 undergraduates of the School of Foreign Studies in Nankai University received their first college lecture “Guide to Choosing Majors”. It is a lecture of the school's general education course “Freshman Seminar”. Prof. Yan Guodong, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, heads of majors and backbone teachers, and more than 240 undergraduates of the School of Foreign Studies of the class of 2024 attended the lecture, and Prof. Wang Kai, Vice Dean in charge of teaching, presided over the course.
In the lecture, the persons-in-charge and key teachers of English, Russian, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, and English, German, Portuguese, and Arabic of the translation majors gave comprehensive and systematic explanations of the historical origins, faculty strength, curriculum, international exchanges, and graduation destinations of the majors. They helped the new students better understand the professional settings and disciplinary connotations of the School of Foreign Languages.
Dean Prof. Yan Guodong warmly welcomed the new undergraduates of the freshmen to join the family of the School of Foreign Studies and made an important conclusion for this course in a profound manner. Prof. Yan elaborated the connotation of foreign language majors with a grand view, summarized the characteristics of each major, systematically and precisely introduced the contents of the two dual-degree programs of FAS and FSE and the specific plan for the construction of the first-class translation majors, and analyzed the advantages and development prospects of each language one by one, which provided sincere, professional and effective advice for students to choose language majors, plan academic paths, and design their career.
Prof. Yan encouraged the freshmen, “Foreign language is the wings that take you to fly, and foreign language learning will give you unlimited possibilities!”
The first lecture “Guide to Choosing Majors” of the “Freshman Seminar” ended successfully with the warm applause of all the 2024 freshmen of the School of Foreign Studies. Teachers from the Teaching and Research Office and the Youth League Committee participated in the whole course.
