Leveraging the Ministry of Education's integrated virtual teaching and research office for foreign language teaching research, the seminar on the teaching model and reform of the "Second-Language Acquisition" course, hosted by the project team of the 2023 Tianjin Municipal Higher Education Graduate Education Reform Project titled "Research on the Path of Cross-School Co-construction of the Course Reform and Ideological and Political System of 'Second-Language Acquisition'," and guided by the Foreign Language Curriculum Research Professional Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese and the Foreign Language Education and Teacher Development Research Center of the School of Foreign Studies at Nankai University, was successfully conducted on the evening of May 29th via the DingTalk platform.
The keynote speaker for this seminar was Professor Zhang Wenzhong from the English Department of the School of Foreign Studies at Nankai University, who is also the project leader. The seminar was hosted by Associate Professor Wang Dongyan from the same department. The entire project team and teachers from various domestic universities who teach the "Second-Language Acquisition" course participated in the seminar.
In his presentation, Professor Zhang Wenzhong reported on the process of reforming the teaching model of this course at Nankai University and introduced the specific application of the "Three-Step Education" model with vivid examples. Subsequently, several participating teachers engaged in discussions with Professor Zhang and the project team. Associate Professor Xu Chengping from Tianjin Normal University discussed the combination of the empowerment and capacity-building work at the Hebei Hejian Rural Foreign Language Education Workstation with second language-acquisition teaching, as well as the teaching challenges encountered. Associate Professor Han Ziyu from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics and Professor Xu Guanglin, Deputy Dean of the Foreign Language Department at Cangzhou Normal University, shared their inspiring practical experiences regarding classroom presentation and evaluation processes in teaching. Teacher Zhang Chenhui from Tianjin Normal University discussed with Professor Zhang the feasibility and specific plans for conducting undergraduate second language acquisition teaching based on a project-based learning model.
This seminar was the second virtual teaching and research activity of the semester organized by the project team of the "Research on the Path of Cross-School Co-construction of the Course Reform and Ideological and Political System of 'Second-Language Acquisition'". It provided insights and references for the teaching reform practice of the project team and the teaching of the second-language acquisition course by industry peers. At the end of the seminar, the host, on behalf of the project team, invited the attendees to participate in the next virtual teaching and research activity to further discuss the integration of ideological and political elements into the course.
