The National English Competition for College Students (NECCS) is a highly-concerned competition that comprehensively displays the teaching level and teaching reform achievements of college English and improves the comprehensive English skills of college students. The annual competition has been held for 25 consecutive sessions since its establishment in 1999. Every year, more than 1.2 million college students from more than 1,200 colleges and universities in 31 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) participate. The content of the competition includes the basic knowledge of English and the skills of reading, listening, speaking, writing and translating. Authorized by the organizing committee of NECCS, the organizing committee of the Tianjin Division Competition of NECCS has been located at the School of Foreign Studies of Nankai University since 2023 to assist in hosting the Tianjin finals of the competition.

SFS has organized and counseled students to participate in this competition for years and attached great importance to it. Each selective trial was successfully completed, and the number of applicants this year has made a record. After the selection, 27 students stood out from the 2,233 contestants and successfully advanced to the Tianjin finals. 75 students won the second prize and 115 students won the third prize at school level.

121 contestants from Tiangong University, Civil Aviation University of China and other universities in Tianjin participated in the provincial finals, including Class A contestants (for graduate students), Class B contestants (for English majors), Class C contestants (for non-English majors) and Class D contestants (for art and vocational college students).

With SFS’s strong support and assistance, the Tianjin Division Competition was a complete success with orderly organization and rigorous marking.

The competition aims at the mutual promotion of learning and teaching through competition. The achievement of the competition results is also a demonstration of SFS’s exploration of college English teaching reform. In the future, teachers of the School of Foreign Studies will work hard to further stimulate students' enthusiasm for English learning, help them consolidate their basic English knowledge and skills, comprehensively improve their comprehensive ability to use English, and make contributions to continuously improving the quality of college English teaching of Nankai University.
