Recently, the Translators Association of China successfully concluded the selection process for the “Lifetime Achievement Award of Translation Culture” and the “Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Translation Workers” in 2024. Professor Gu Hengdong, a retired teacher from School of Foreign Studies, Nankai University, was honored with the title of “Lifetime Achievement Award of Translation Culture,” while Professor Hu Cui’e received the title of “Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Translation Worker.”
Gu Hengdong (pen name: Gu Yu) graduated from the Foreign Languages Department of Nankai University, majoring in Russian, and has been a professor at the School of Foreign Studies of Nankai University. He has been engaged in translation work for over 50 years. His book Chinese-Russian Chinese Poetry Reader was selected as one of the national key book publishing projects in the 13th Five-Year Plan. He has translated dozens of poetry and literature collections and published a monograph titled Sailboat, Drifting on the Sea of Poetry: A Study of Translation of Chinese and Russian Poetry. In 1999, he was awarded the Pushkin Memorial Medal and Certificate of Honour by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. In 2015, he was awarded the title of “Senior Translator” by the China Translators Association. In 2018, he received the Chen Zi’ang Translator Award from Poetry Magazine. In 2019, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Russian Language Education. In 2024, he was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award for Translation and Culture” by the Translators Association of China. The “Lifetime Achievement Award for Translation Culture” will be presented in 2024.
Professor Hu Cui’e received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Nankai University. She has worked intensively in the field of translation history and has extensively studied Chinese and Western history, philosophy, culture, and religion. She possesses a broad research vision and innovative research methodology, and has developed academic characteristics that involve the mutual utilization of translation history and the history of thought. Her representative works, Literary Translation and Cultural Participation: A Cultural Study of Novel Translation in the Late Qing Dynasty and The “Politics” of Translation: The Translation Debate and the Literary and Cultural Debate in the Modern Literary World, are historical, cultural, and literary interdisciplinary studies of the literary translation activities in the late Qing Dynasty and the May Fourth Period, respectively. These works are pioneering achievements in combining the cultural and ideological histories of translation. Professor Hu’s academic rigor and seriousness, along with the depth and quality of her research, have been acknowledged and appreciated by the translation community and the overseas sinology research community. In 2024, she was honored with the title of “Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Translation Worker” by the Translation Association of China.
Founded in 1982, the Translation Association of China (TAC) is a national, industrial, and non-profit social organization formed voluntarily by translators and translation-related enterprises, institutions, social groups, and individuals. It is the only nationwide social organization in the field of translation in China, comprising groups and individual members in all provinces, cities, and districts across the country. The “Lifetime Achievement Award for Translation Culture” is the highest industry award for individual translators established by the TAC. It is awarded to translators with outstanding achievements, wide influence, and high moral standing in the field of translation and cross-cultural communication. The title “Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Translators” honors young translators who are committed to their homeland, possess a deep understanding of both China and foreign countries, and demonstrate exceptional translation skills and remarkable achievements. The commendation activities organized by the TAC have been widely noticed and recognized by people from all walks of life.
