On the morning of 10th January, the kick-off meeting for the “Nankai Standard” teaching reform of the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors was held in conference room 208 at the College of Foreign Languages. During the meeting, teachers engaged in comprehensive and in-depth exchanges and discussions regarding the newly formulated Nankai Excellence in English Writing Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft) and Nankai Excellence in English Speaking Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft).
Prof. Yan Guodong, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages, attended the launching meeting of the teaching reform. Prof. Yan fully affirmed the outstanding achievements made by the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors in professional development, teaching reform, and team building. He encouraged all members to view the “Nankai Standard” teaching reform as an opportunity to uphold the excellent tradition of the Department of Public and Foreign Languages, known for its enterprising spirit and bold innovation. He urged them to persist in overcoming challenges and strive for excellence in their pursuits. Prof. Yan also mentioned that the college will spare no effort to support and promote the “Nankai Standard” teaching reform.
Prof. Ma Hongqi, Deputy Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and director of the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors, said that the teachers were encouraged by the recognition of the new standard by President Chen Yulu and the Ministry of Education. The college and the department will adhere to the university's instructions to implement the “Nankai Standard” teaching reform thoroughly and practically. The goal is to nurture high-quality talents for the country who are able to tell the Chinese story well and possess global competence.
Tang Lei, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors, introduced the background, basic orientation, competency framework, and competency levels of the Nankai Excellence in English Writing Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft) and the Nankai Excellence in English Speaking Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft). Tang Lei also discussed with the teachers how to effectively implement the Nankai Standards in a warm atmosphere.
The Nankai Excellence in English Writing Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft) and the Nankai Excellence in English Speaking Competency Standards and Cultivation Programme (Discussion Draft) focus on students' ability to use English for effective written and oral communication. These programs hold practical significance in the teaching and assessment of English writing and speaking at universities. The implementation of the program will effectively improve students' ability and confidence to participate in international written and oral communication on general and academic topics. It will enhance their comprehensive qualities in terms of global vision, international awareness, and cross-cultural communication, and cultivate globally competent Nankai students.
