CFL’s 3rd Ph. D. Reading Workshop Successfully Held

On the afternoon of December 29, 2023, the Research Center for Foreign Literature of the College of Foreign Languages at Nankai University, and the Tianjin Foreign Literature Association jointly organized the Third Ph. D. Reading Workshop. The workshop was hosted by Professor Wang Lidan. Attendees include Professor Ma Hongqi, Professor Li Li, Professor Liu Yuzhen, Professor Liu Ying, Associate Professor Jiang Min, Dr. Hou Jie, and Dr. Shi Yuchen, and doctoral and postgraduate students from the College.

Five Ph.D. students in Russian, English, and Japanese Language and Literature shared their reading and research experiences. Liu Xueqing introduced Lotman's view of space and his important method of dichotomy for analyzing the space of literature within the context of structural literary studies. Mu Yuyao introduced the theoretical origins, representative theorists, and the application of the “Material Turn in Literary Research”. Qin Pengjun introduced “Nexus, Physical Activities, and Actor-Network Theory,” discussing the breakthrough and development of Latour and the sociology of nexus. Shang Wanqi explained the limits of literary criticism and emphasized the importance of “post-critical reading” when “criticism” has become a dogma in the humanities. Zhou Weiwei introduced the concept, method, evolution, and influence of the Japanese Kanbun-kundoku style in the context of “How Japanese Read Chinese Canonical Texts: Starting from Japanese Kanbun-kundoku Style” .

The students asked questions enthusiastically, and the professors shared their opinions and suggestions. All attendees were benefited greatly from the discussion in a warm atmosphere.
