In early December, the 26th National “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” Foreign Language Capability Competition and the National “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” Intercultural Capability Competition for College Students were successfully concluded. The results of NKU students this year demonstrate the exceptional abilities of Nankai students, surpassing all previous records in the two competitions at the University.

In the National “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” Foreign Language Capability Competition, seven NKU contestants won one gold medal, three silver medals, and three bronze medals after several rounds of online and offline competitions. In the Tianjin Region competition, 11 contestants won awards, including 1 Grand Prize, 2 First Prizes, 4 Second Prizes, and 4 Third Prizes.

In the National “FLTRP-ETIC Cup” Intercultural Capability Competition, nine players from three teams were selected to participate, and one of the teams won the second prize after three rounds of competition. All the teams won awards in the Tianjin Region, including one first prize and two third prizes.

The “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” Foreign Language Capability Competition and “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” Intercultural Capability Competition are national authoritative academic competitions recognized by the China Association of Higher Education. Since the launch of the two competitions this year, they have attracted the participation of nearly one million contestants from more than 1,300 colleges and universities in 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China. The two competitions assess competitors' language proficiency, comprehension, logical thinking, and intercultural communication skills across various dimensions. They aim to foster and steer Chinese university students in the new era towards becoming high-quality international talents who possess knowledge of, affection for, and understanding of China.

To better support Nankai University students in participating in high-level foreign language competitions, deepening the reform of university’s foreign language teaching, and serving the development strategy of Nankai University, the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors at the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University established the “Guidance Centre for Foreign Language Competitions of Nankai University” (hereinafter referred to as the “Guidance Centre”). To innovate the way of nurturing individuals in foreign language disciplines, expand the path of nurturing people, and improve the level of education, the Guidance Centre enhances the promotion of competitions, identifies potential talents for competitions, and provides regular professional guidance.

According to the specific requirements of each competition, 14 teachers from the Guidance Centre offered personalized or group guidance to the participants of both the Tianjin Competition and the National Competition, aiming to help the contestants attain outstanding results. In the future, the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors will continue to uphold the concept of “promoting learning through competition.” The department aims to cultivate globally competent international talents by actively encouraging more students to participate in various foreign language competitions. This initiative will create synergy between competition practice and foreign language classroom teaching, ultimately enhancing the university's talent cultivation efforts.
