The College of Foreign Languages (CFL) of Nankai University held the 3rd Academic Forum for National Postgraduate Students of Foreign Languages on Nov. 25, 2023. Professor Yan Guodong, Dean of the College, presented the opening ceremony. Many professors from different universities were invited to join the forum and deliver keynote speeches, including Prof. Wang Heping from Xi’an International Studies University, Prof. Li Jing from Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Prof. You Haiyan from East China Normal University, Prof. Lv Ying from Nankai University, etc. Besides postgraduate and Ph.D. students from NKU, more than 230 students from other prestigious universities at home and abroad such as Beijing University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Shanghai International Studies University attended the academic forum as well.
The Graduate Student Union of the College of Foreign Languages of NKU hosted the forum. To make it easier to join, the forum was held online on the platform Feishu through live streaming. The agenda of the one-day event included the opening ceremony and keynote speeches in the morning as well as special group discussions and the closing ceremony in the afternoon. The forum covers multiple languages including English, Japanese, Russian, and various frontier research fields, namely, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, foreign literature, regional and national research, comparative literature and trans-culture study, and translatology. It aims to build a professional, equal, and inclusive academic exchange platform for students of foreign languages nationwide.
In the opening address of Prof. Yan Guodong, he first reviewed the journey and original purpose of the forum held by CFL since 2021. Then he analyzed its necessity from the perspectives of the development of foreign language subjects, talent cultivation, and study situation of the students, giving credit to the academic value and significance of holding this forum. At last, he expressed his anticipation that the participating students could exchange ideas, learn from each other, and elevate their language capability comprehensively to make it worthwhile. The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Li Min, Vice Dean of the College.

The experts and scholars delivered prominent keynote speeches at the forum. In the report named “The Writing and Publishing of Journal Articles of Foreign Languages”, Prof. Wang Heping from Xi’an International Studies University introduced the writing process and techniques of foreign languages related papers based on the disciplinary features, elaborated the design of columns, submission process, and characteristics of topics, and gave suggestions on developing research ability of lecturers. In “The New Discourse, New Model, New Ideas of CPC History Translation” delivered by Prof. Li Jing of Tianjin Foreign Studies University, she pointed out that the translation discourse of CPC history expanded the spatial categories of international political discourse, which can be seen as a new branch of political discourse translation practice. The interaction between CPC history translation and diverse translation subjects as well as the dual translation path of combining “self-translation” and “other-translation” could be a new model of CPC history translation. Last but not least, ensuring the internal coherence of ideological security and image shaping is a new idea that needs to be paid attention to in the translation practice. Prof. You Haiyan from East China Normal University addressed a report named “The Allusion Usage of Japanese Classical Literature”, in which she introduced multiple allusion-using types. She proposed that the allusion’s essence and instruction should be considered beyond words. Prof. Lv Ying of Nankai University presented a report named “The Organization and Research of Documents of French Concessions in China Kept by Archives of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, describing the French Concessions vividly. Based on the French Concessions, she deeply analyzed the evolution of China-France relations in modern history and the invading powers’ influence on China and their mutual relationships. These speeches were hosted respectively by Prof. Zhang Wenzhong, Prof. Zhang Zhizhong, Associate Prof. Jiang Yundou, and Associate Prof. Yang Lin.

Representatives of postgraduate students also shared their insightful opinions. Hosted by Zhai Runyu and Liu Anqi from the presidium of the Graduate Student Union of CFL, Zhang Yiyang from Nanjing University, Wang Xiaowen from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Sun Meng from Nankai University, and Gao Jiu from King’s College London presented their research outcomes respectively, reflecting the great academic capability of contemporary postgraduate and doctoral students of foreign languages.
During the 17 special group discussions in the afternoon, all groups conducted academic presentations and exchanged ideas. The professors gave each student suggestions and feedback, and they also absorbed inspiration from other students’ research.
The forum received 738 papers from students of higher institutions at home and abroad. After two rounds of careful and professional review, 4 special awards, 8 first awards, 19 second awards, and 28 third awards were announced by Prof. Li Min, Vice Dean of CFL, in the closing ceremony.
On behalf of the organizing committee, Zhang Haoyang from the presidium of the Graduate Student Union made a concluding remark. He said that this forum is expected to be a platform for all postgraduate and doctoral students of foreign languages nationwide to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and expand their research horizons. What’s more, he hoped that by taking advantage of this activity, more students could have a further understanding of the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University with its profound history and traditions, and therefore broadcasting the sound of NKU.
