Prof Guo Cunhai from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Gives a Lecture

On Dec. 6 and 7, invited by the Portuguese Department of CFL, Professor Guo Cunhai, Senior Research and Director of the Department of Social and Cultural Studies, Institute of Latin American Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), gave two lectures at CFL, with the themes of “Chinese Modernization and Sino-Latin Knowledge Cooperation on Development” and “A Survey and Analysis on Chinese Studies in Brazil” respectively. The lecture drew much attention, attracting students and faculty from the Portuguese Department and other majors.


With a Ph.D. in Law, Professor Guo Cunhai is a Senior Researcher of CASS, Director of the Department of Social and Cultural Studies and Executive Director of the Center for Argentine Studies, Institute of Latin American Studies of CASS. He is also a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.


In the lecture on Dec. 6, Professor Guo first talked about the profound connotation of Chinese modernization, then systematically explained its five features and essential requirements, and finally explained in detail the three stages of modernization in Latin America. In addition, he also analyzed the experience of Latin American modernization,emphasizing the importance of Sino-Latin American knowledge cooperation on development.

In the lecture on Dec. 7, Professor Guo focused on Chinese studies in Brazil and introduced its general information. Professor Guo said that with the deepening of Sino-Brazilian friendship, young Brazilian scholars show strong interest in the development model of modern China and carry out a series of collaborative research in Sino-Brazilian diplomatic relations and other fields. This lively lecture was a worthwhile academic feast for attendees.

In the Q&A, Professor Guo patiently answered all the questions from the participating teachers and students, giving them valuable suggestions, which benefited the attendees a lot.
