The College of Foreign Languages held the first Research Method Workshop in the autumn semester in the afternoon of November 2 with the aim of implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of CPC, cultivating youth professionals, promoting research level and academic quality of students and faculties, and creating an innovative atmosphere. The event was hosted by Prof. Li Min, Vice Dean of the College. Participants of the event include faculty members from Department of English, Department of French, and Department of Foreign Language for Non-Majors, which covered visiting scholars, Ph.D. students, postgraduates, and undergraduates.

Tian Yiming, a 2017 NKU undergraduate and UCL master majoring in TESOL, shared a presentation entitled with “The Application of Idiodynamic Method in Language Study and Research”. Tian started from the interactive willingness of second language learning and explained  the dynamic turn of second language acquisition, and provides a detailed explanation of the origin, connotation, and characteristics of the theory of complex dynamic systems. She introduces two paradigms of horizontal and vertical research, and also explains the four steps of recording, scoring, backtracking, and labeling. Finally, Tian Yiming explained the specific operations of data collection and analysis, which deepened the understanding of dynamic system theory and practice among teachers and students through specific and detailed explanations.

In the Q&A section, Tian Yiming answered questions raised by master's and doctoral students and provided suggestions for future research. Finally, Professor Li Min gave a concluding speech. He pointed out that in the context of the approaching maturity of qualitative annotation methods, it is of great significance to conduct both quantitative and qualitative, macro and micro research using the qualitative annotation method system. “Today, Tian Yiming introduced the individual dynamic method and specific annotation cases, which can not only further expand academic horizons and deepen research methods, but also meaningful for paper writing.” This workshop lasted for two hours and was rich in content. The attending teachers and students expressed that they benefited a lot from it.

This event is the first research method workshop of the 2023-2024 autumn semester. The workshop will be held every two weeks. The application of SPSS, STATA, E-prime, Meta-analysis, and other methods in linguistic research will also be discussed during this term. All teachers and students are welcome to attend.
