The provincial-level final of the 12th All China Interpreting Contest (English)came to a close recently. It was directed by the China International Communications Group (CICG) and hosted by the Translators Association of China (TAC). Under the guidance of Ms. Ma Jing from the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors, Xu Shuang, a 2022 master student majoring in English interpretation, stood out in the competition with her good language proficiency, interpreting competence, and psychological quality. She won the first prize in Tianjin and the honorary title of "Interpretation Star", successfully entering the national final.
The 12th All China Interpreting Contest, as a national brand interpreting competition, aims to cultivate professional teams of talents in the translation and language service industry so as to promote the construction of the translation discipline and the prosperity of the related industry. It helps cultivate high-quality language talents and better serves the overall national development and international communication capacity building. It is also a competition listed in the "Chinese University Translation Ability Index" and has become one of the important platforms for national ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce to select outstanding international communication talents.
The College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University is one of the first 15 approved teaching units to offer a master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting (MTI program). Its translation discipline boasts a long history and profound academic background. Based on the urgent demand for high-end language service talents brought by the rapid development of the global language service industry, its MTI program follows the "value chain" of the industry and sets up a number of professional translation courses that bear Nankai characteristics and meet the training objectives, which include computer-aided translation (CAT), localization technology and practice, translation project management, technical writing, legal translation, terminology translation application, and simulation conference interpreting. The opening of diversified courses can continuously strengthen students' knowledge and skills in consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation.
