Famous Peking Opera artists visits Nankai University - Lingke's Special Meeting

Adhering to the concept of "exploring the aesthetics of Peking Opera and spreading national literature and art", and allowing more young people to experience the beauty of Peking Opera and spread China's excellent traditional culture, in the afternoon of April 16, Ling Ke, a famous Peking Opera actor who plays the elderly male role, gave a special lecture for Nankai students. The activity was successfully held in the auditorium of the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University.

The event invited national first-class actor Ling Ke, to share the art of Beijing Opera with teachers and students in Nankai. Xiang Yu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, Liang Song, Instructor of the International Development Office of the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University and the Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University, Wang Caixia, a lecturer of the French Department, Le Xiaoyue, a foreign teacher of the Italian Department, Sergey, a foreign teacher of the Russian Department attended the event. Tao Muning, a professor from the School of Literature of Nankai University and an expert on classical novels and operas, came to give guidance.

At the beginning of the event, Xiang Yu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of the College of Foreign Languages, delivered a speech. Xiang said that the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University attaches great importance to students' aesthetic education. The Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University has been established for 24 years, creating a community platform integrating Peking Opera popularization, Peking Opera appreciation and Peking Opera performance practice for teachers and students in Nankai, and is also the first Chinese amateur Peking Opera troupe to step onto the international stage. Ling Ke's visit to Nankai will definitely enable more young people to experience the charm of Beijing Opera art up close and experience the excellent traditional Chinese culture firsthand. Xiang also issued an appointment letter to Mr. Ling Ke, which qualifies him as the artistic counselor of the Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University.


After the appointment, Mr. Ling Ke began to give a lecture, mainly about the rhythmical parts and three-level rhyme of Beijing Opera. Taking You Heng and Li Keyong as examples, He explained and demonstrated how to create different characters through the subtle differences in body shape, speech and skill. Then he told the difference and connection between traditional opera and modern opera, and what kind of spiritual core modern opera should maintain. Ling Ke is witty, humorous, and full of talent. At the same time, he also showcased many Beijing Opera arias and recitations, allowing Nankai teachers and students to not only satisfy their desire to admire the opera but also learn a lot of knowledge.

After the speech, the interactive session begins. Liu Ziju, a member of the Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University, sang an excerpt from the Peking Opera "Zhaiying Hui", and Yu Huazhen, a student of Lingke, sang an excerpt from the Peking Opera "Hongyang Cave".

Later, Liang Song, the instructor of the International Development Office of the College of Foreign Languages and the Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University, made a speech. Liang said that the lecture on the popularization of Peking Opera art held in the College of Foreign Languages was of special significance as every student should learn foreign languages well and tell Chinese stories well. The College of Foreign Languages has the highest proportion of teachers and students in overseas exchanges and foreign teachers in Nankai University, and our foreign teachers also participated in the event, which means this event provides an important platform and channel for Chinese culture to go global. We welcome Ling Ke to come to the Peking Opera Troupe of Nankai University frequently for exchange and guidance.

Finally, Ling Ke and Liang Song teamed up to sing excerpts from Beijing Opera's "the Fourth Son Visits His Mother". Amidst enthusiastic applause from classmates, Ling Ke also added excerpts from "Hongyang Cave", which read "Since then, I have been seriously ill since I left the court", and excerpts from "the War in the Taiping City", which read "Wearing a purple and gold crown to cover my eyebrows and head". The students present were enthusiastic and cheering incessantly.

At the end of the event, Ling Ke provided serious and detailed answers to the questions raised by several audience members. Afterwards, He explained and demonstrated the simple figures of Beijing Opera's female role and supporting role to Italian teacher Le Xiaoyue and Russian teacher Sergey respectively.


After the activity, the students warmly asked for autograph and took photos with Ling Ke as a souvenir.

The first activity of Peking Opera masters entering the campus of Nankai University ended successfully. In the future, the Peking Opera Troupe will continue to invite more great masters of Peking Opera to visit Nankai University to share the art of Peking Opera with teachers and students and promote excellent traditional culture.
