On the evening of October 21, 2022, invited by the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, Professor Mao Yansheng, Vice Dean and PhD supervisor of the School of Foreign Studies of Harbin Engineering University, gave an academic report on international journal publications for teachers and students of the College. More than 300 people, including teachers and students of Nankai University, attended the online event. The report was hosted by Professor Li Min, Vice Dean of the College of Foreign Languages.
In the lecture, Prof. Mao Yansheng firstly started from how to determine the selected topic, suggesting to combine the direction you are good at with the research hotspots, and also your personal experience with the requirements of the national strategy. He suggested that actionable topics can be found from regularly browsing newspapers and journals, attending conferences diligently and discussing more with teachers and students. At the same time, a topic can be extended from micro to macro, and published in a diversified and systematic way. Then, Professor Mao Yansheng introduced the mainstream SSCI and A&HCI journals in linguistics with examples. In terms of submitting manuscripts, Prof. Mao Yansheng believed that it is important to follow personal interests. He emphasized the importance of a like-minded team and considered that team is the driving force for sustainable development. Finally, Prof. Mao Yansheng discussed the significance of writing a series of papers, which not only optimizes the use of resources, but also maximizes the academic scholarship and minimizes the academic cost. Professor Mao Yansheng also introduced the four hurdles of writing serial papers and the difficulties in language, literature, argumentation and innovation, and he proposed corresponding ways to break them. After the report, Prof. Mao Yansheng patiently answered the questions raised by teachers and students. The participants said that Prof. Mao Yansheng’s report was high-level-oriented and concrete at the same time.
Professor Mao Yansheng is a member of the international team of “emancipatory pragmatics”, executive director of the China Pragmatics Association, part-time researcher of the Chinese Language Strategy Research Center, member of the Academic Committee of Harbin Engineering University, vice dean of the School of Foreign Studies and reviewer of academic monograph series of Cambridge University Press and John Wiley Publishers. He has published more than 40 papers in Journal of Pragmatics, Pragmatics & Society, Language & Communication, Discourse, Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies, and other SSCI and CSSCI journals, and has undertaken the anonymous review of Lingua, System Language Sciences, Journal of Pragmatics and other SSCI journals. Professor Mao Yansheng’s lecture, as the third lecture in the series of lectures to improve the research ability of the College of Foreign Languages, will further promote the improvement of the research level of the College.
