In order to guide the new graduate students to maintain academic ethics, adhere to academic integrity and pass on the NKU’s 100-year academic tradition, the Postgraduates’ Union of the College of Foreign Languages invited Professor Li Min, the vice dean of the College, to bring a symposium on “Scientific Ethics and Academic Standards” to all 2022 graduate students.

In the lecture, Professor Li Min gave a lecture to the students from six aspects: the fine tradition of Nankai University, the 100-year history of the College of Foreign Languages, postgraduate thesis writing and its norms, the definition of academic misconduct and its manifestations, commonly used academic resources and other norms in life.

Professor Li Min said that the students of NKU take a strong stand and have excellent qualities. Graduate students should learn to “endure loneliness, withstand temptation and bear setbacks”. He emphasized that the thesis writing standard is the key to the external review of the dissertation and the submission of journal papers. Subsequently, he gave a counter-example to warn the students not to translate papers between two languages or plagiarize papers. Students should be alert and attach importance to academic traps and gray industry chains of buying papers written by others. He also listed various instances of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism, forgery, violation of research ethics and improper authorship. Meanwhile, it is added that the academic achievements should be judged scientifically, and it should not be biased. Professor Li Min suggested that the students should enhance their awareness of “Core Journals”. In other words, when using databases such as CNKI, Web of Science, ScienceDirect (Elsevier), etc., students should start from CSSCI to core journals and then to all journals, gradually expanding the scope for paper retrieval.

After the symposium, Professor Li Min also answered the students’ questions about postgraduate study life. The participating students had a warm interaction and communication, expressing their deep inspiration.

At the same time, the College also invited Mr. Zhang Di from the library subject service department to give a special lecture on the use of library resources with the theme of “Mastering Academic Resources and Expanding Research Vision”. The College hopes to improve the humanistic quality and professional ability of the new graduate students and help them to cultivate strong skills and climb up to the peak of academics.
