In August 2022, teachers and students from the College of Foreign Languages went to Yangjiayu Village, Jizhou District, and cooperated with the locals to carry out educational activities. Affected by the epidemic, the volunteer teachers team adopted the way of “Online Aid Education” to provide local primary and secondary school students with online courses with rich content and diverse forms.
Yangjiayu Village is located in the northern mountainous area of Luozhuangzi Town, Jizhou District, Tianjin, covering a total area of about 25 square kilometers. It was awarded the fifth “National Civilized Village and Townships” in 2017. The village has a “red tradition” and “red genes” that have been passed down for many years. In 2017, Li Hongzhong, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and secretary of the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee, visited Yangjiayu Village and put forward constructive suggestions on the local rural revitalization work. By taking advantage of this opportunity, the foreign language practice team has cooperated with the local area for two consecutive years. From the aspects of party building, teaching support, labor education and other aspects, the practice team had in-depth exchanges with the village committee of Yangjiayu Village. In the summer practice evaluation of Nankai University in 2021, the team carrying out the program of party building work and rural revitalization practice survey of Yangjiayu Village, Jizhou District, Tianjin City, won the university-level advanced team.
In order to consolidate the achievements of last year, the team of the College summarized experience and continued to carry out activities in Yangjiayu Village this year. In the early stage of this year’s event, the members actively communicated with Yangjiayu Village and conducted sufficient research and preparations. This year’s activities focus on after-school services and practical teaching and take advantage of the disciplines to design a series of interesting extra-curricular activities about language, helping local children spend a fulfilling and happy holiday. The members of the practice team adopted a variety of teaching methods and made full use of the online teaching platform to support teaching through courses such as interaction, group presentation and after-class feedback. The practice team was committed to improving the foreign language ability of local students and broadening the international perspective of local students.
The activity was fully affirmed by the Yangjiayu Village Committee and the masses. After the online teaching, the village committee sent a letter of thanks to the College, praising the hard work of the students. The letter said: “Starting from 2020, our village has become the labor education base of the College. The practice team gave a 150-minute class every morning, carefully preparing courseware for another 150 minutes in the afternoon and patiently teaching 150 children. The curriculum design included culture, sports, English and other subjects. The practice team not only provided in-class knowledge guidance to the primary school students in our village, but also broadened their horizons. By understanding the history of Nankai University, the children’s yearning for college education has been enhanced. All in all, the 14-day counseling has really benefited the children in my village a lot.”
College of Foreign Languages will continue to carry out in-depth cooperation and exchanges with Yangjiayu Village in Jizhou District. Focusing on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, students from the College can further realize the important role of education in the rural revitalization and contribute to the local development and construction of NKU.
