On May 5th, the College of Foreign Languages invited Luo Jun, a national first-class actor and director, to the “Foreign Language Drama” class to give a face-to-face lecture on performance practice, so as to provide students with more professional and high-quality drama performance guidance. The lecture was presided over by Wang Ziyu, a counselor of the College of Foreign Languages, Xiang Yu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Dean of the College, Liu Jiping, Director of the Department of French, and Xue Xiaohan, a teacher of the Department of Portuguese, attended the lecture.

Luo Jun firstly watched the “multilingual” performances of the Chinese classic drama Thunderstorm by students majoring in English, Portuguese and French. Through detailed analysis and in-depth interpretation of different characters, he systematically expounded the characteristics of drama performance to the students from various perspectives such as character identity, language expression, and body shape. In order to help the students to further understand the roles, Luo Jun took the character “Fan Yi” in the Fourth Act of Thunderstorm as an example, and he gave one-to-one guidance on the expression of the lines spoken by “Fan Yi”. Luo Jun, who has more than 18 years of experience in the performance of Thunderstorm, said that Fan Yi in the Fourth Act of Thunderstorm is in a state of irrationality, so she should have stronger emotional expression and language expression during the performance. Luo Jun took this as an example to remind the students that they should mainly adjust and grasp the different emotions and states of the characters when facing different characters and different plots.

Luo Jun said that drama education has a positive role in promoting life development. Although the students are not professional drama actors, through the interpretation of the segments, he could really feel the students’ enthusiasm for performance. Luo Jun encouraged everyone to continuously improve their expressive ability by learning drama performance. Through careful observation, students could learn to understand the people, things and things around them.

After the class, the students said that the practical guidance on acting skills has benefited them a lot. The students not only had a preliminary concept of drama performance skills but also had a deeper understanding of the characters to be created.

It is reported that the College of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to foreign language drama education and constantly explores effective methods and long-term mechanisms for the curriculum construction of foreign language drama. Since 2020, the College of Foreign Languages has included foreign language drama in the talent training plan, and the nine-language “Foreign Language Drama” courses have been piloted in the College of Foreign Languages. Through the dual-track operation of teaching and practice, it organizes teachers and students to co-edit, co-translate, co-study and co-perform, guiding students to experience the cultural charm of Chinese drama. The unique beauty of classic dramas in foreign languages will promote Chinese drama culture on the world stage.
