In order to highlight the disciplinary characteristics of the College, to enrich students’ professional practice, and to stimulate their interest in interpretation learning, on December 12, the Translation Center of the College of Foreign Languages and the Third Party Branch of the Master’s Students of the College jointly held the 2021 Interpretation Contest. Wang Kai, Associate Dean of the College and associate professor of Japanese Department, and Luan Haiyan and Wang Dan, teachers of the English Department, were invited as on-site judges.
The theme of this competition was “Translating Something New”, including interpreting content - news broadcast, involving hotspots of current international and domestic affairs of timeliness, authenticity and freshness. The mode of consecutive interpretation was adopted, covering three translation directions, namely, Japanese-Chinese, Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation. It was the first time for students majoring in Japanese interpretation and English interpretation at the College to have the opportunity to cooperate and compete on the same stage.
The competition was divided into Japanese-English pair competitions and English-Chinese single competitions. The judges scored on the spot according to the accuracy of interpretation content, fluency of language expression, speed control and manners. The whole competition went smoothly. The contestants brought a wonderful interpretation competition to the audience with their solid professional foundation and stable on-site performance.
This competition was not only an exchange of professional skills, but also an opportunity to learn from each other. Hopefully, through the competition, the contestants could realize their own shortcomings in the application of skills and details. They could reflect, review, summarize and improve their skills, and continuously study interpretation skills in their professional practice and explore the charm of interpretation.
Wang Kai said after the competition that it was the embodiment of “foreign language expertise, humanistic quality, international visions, Chinese affections, and Nankai characteristics” in the talent training concept of the College of Foreign Languages. In addition, language talents nowadays should also have a sense of mission and social responsibility, and should spare no efforts to tell Chinese stories, disseminate Chinese voices, and interpret Chinese characteristics in today's increasingly complex international arena.
