On November 13 and 14, the second round and final of the 24th Tianjin College Students’ English Speech Contest and the 2021 “FLTRP · Guocai Cup” National English Speech Contest in Tianjin were successfully held. The competition was hosted by Tianjin Education Commission, assisted by Tianjin Education Enrollment and Examination Institute, Tianjin University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and undertaken by the College of Foreign Languages and Literature of Tianjin University.
In order to follow the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the speech contest took the form of “online contest” for the first time. The main venue was set at Tianjin University, the sub venue was set at the universities where the contestants were located, and the contest judges conduct remote evaluation by video in the main venue. Five Nankai students competed with more than 80 contestants from 30 universities in Tianjin.
The speech contest was divided into two parts: semi-finals and finals. In the semi-finals, the contestants delivered a fixed topic speech and an impromptu speech in turn. The theme of this final speech was “Red Star over China”, which was instructive. The contestants closely followed the theme, and the speech ranged from blessing the party’s Centennial birthday, paying tribute to the prosperity and development of the new era, to spreading the exemplary spirit of the times, etc. The contestants seized the hot spots of society, reviewed the revolutionary ancestors emerged in China’s development process, showed the posture of China standing on the world stage in the new era, and demonstrated the demeanor of the new generation of college students with patriotism and global vision.
The topics of the impromptu speech are rich and diverse. It originates from social hot spots and is close to students’ life. It can investigate the overall quality of the contestants in all aspects, and show the contestants’ excellent language ability, multiple perspective of observation and deep thinking on practical matters.
After three rounds of fierce competition, 21 players entered the finals. The final session includes four stages: prepared speech, question answering, impromptu speech and quick answer to integrated knowledge to fully investigate the contestants’ comprehensive English ability.
Finally, Cui Xingyu, a contestant from Nankai University, won the special prize of the 24th Tianjin College Students’ English Speech Contest and the final of the “FLTRP · Guocai Cup” National English Speech Contest in Tianjin in 2021. She will participate in the national finals on behalf of Tianjin with two contestants from other colleges and universities in Tianjin to present the demeanor of Tianjin college students in the national arena.

In order to follow the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the semi-finals of Tianjin Writing and Reading Competition also adopt the form of online competition.
