On November 13, the first graduate academic forum of School of Foreign Languages of Nankai University was successfully held in lecture Hall 111. The forum was hosted by the Graduate Student Union and Translation Center of the School of Foreign Languages of Nankai University and was conducted online and offline for one and a half days. On the first day, keynote speech and outstanding graduate student representative speech were given in the morning, group discussion was held in the afternoon, and keynote speech and closing ceremony were given in the morning of the next day. Yan Guodong, Dean of school of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, Mu Xiangwang, Secretary of Party Committee of School of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, Professor Luo Hongbo, researcher of Institute of European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of Italian Studies Institute of European Societies of China, and other well-known experts were invited to attend the forum. There are more than 200 masters and doctoral students from more than 30 universities in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei including Peking University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Foreign Studies University and so on.
The forum covers five research areas: foreign literature studies, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, translation studies, comparative literature and cross-cultural studies, as well as national and regional studies.
Professor Yan Guodong, Dean of School of Foreign Languages, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The speech expressed warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the distinguished guests, and emphasized the practical value and significance of the postgraduate Forum. He pointed out that the School of Foreign Languages of Nankai University attaches great importance to postgraduate training. This forum aims to improve the quality of postgraduate training, enhance postgraduate research ability, stimulate postgraduate research enthusiasm, strengthen postgraduate research confidence, and build a platform dedicated to regular academic exchanges between postgraduate students. In his speech, Dean Yan proposed five topics for the forum, expressing his ardent expectations for the younger generation of graduate students, and hoping that the forum would create a good opportunity for academic exchanges between teachers and students.
Experts and scholars from both inside and outside the university delivered keynote speeches on different topics during the conference. Professor Luo Hongbo, a researcher of The Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out the special status of regional country studies and the methods of regional country studies. Professor Li Li, doctoral supervisor of English Department, pointed out three paradigms and four paths of landscape research, introduced the theme of cultural landscape research and the new concept of landscape under the trend of globalization, and revealed the interactive relationship and tension between human culture and the natural world. The thesis discusses in depth the cultural geography value of landscape research in the contemporary background. Professor Liu Yuzhen, doctoral supervisor of The Department of Japanese, introduced the written materials of the first Legation in Japan and Japanese friends, such as Tomosu Ohchi and Seiichiro Miyashima, and discussed the written materials and the issues of east Asian cultural exchanges. Professor Wang Lidan, director of The Russian Department, focused on documentary drama, which objectively, truthfully and quickly reflected the social function of the focus issues, and introduced contemporary Russian documentary drama that directly hits the real problems of Russia. Combined with his own experience and direct experience, professor Zhang Wenzhong pointed out that the graduate students are the main force of the development of future foreign language function, encouraging graduate students to explore knowledge, make the unity of theory and application, use professional expertise to serve the society, build a sound academic development way. Professor Zhang Zhizhong, director of the Translation Department, introduced two strategies of Translating Chinese poetry into English -- academic translation emphasizing fidelity and literary translation emphasizing literariness, and expounded the advantages and disadvantages of the two strategies combined with the reality, pointing out the effectiveness and necessity of promoting literary translation in order to promote Chinese culture to go out.
The forum was divided into 17 sub-forums for group discussion. The discussion was lively. Experts’ comments are accurate. Participants in the meeting said that they benefited a lot.
In addition, the forum also established a prize for outstanding papers. After careful evaluation by experts, 10 first prizes, 20 second prizes and 40 third prizes were selected from 147 papers received. At the closing ceremony, Ma Hongqi, vice president of the School of Foreign Languages, read the list of winners.
On behalf of the organizing committee, Huang Xin, vice president of graduate Student Union, concluded that the forum was a successful academic feast. Students talked about their own academic views, exchanged their own experience in study and work, put forward questions and doubts, humbly consulted experts. The experts’ advice and guidance embody the appreciation and care of students. Through academic exchange activities, the purpose of mutual learning, mutual promotion and common improvement has been achieved. In just two days, students not only listened to the speeches of famous experts and tempered their academic thoughts, but also got the guidance of experts as well as established a deep friendship.
The organizing committee also invites students to participate in next year’s forum.
