On September 14, the 2021 orientation meeting of the school of foreign languages of Nankai University was held in Tian Jiabing concert hall. The leaders attending the conference are as follows.
Mu Xiangwang, Secretary of the Party committee of the college, Yan Guodong, President of the college, Ma Hongqi, Hu Jun, Li Xia, Wang Kai, vice presidents of the college, and other leaders of the college; Doctoral tutors: Professor Yan Guodong, Professor Ma Hongqi, Professor Liu Ying, Professor Li Min, Professor Zhang Wenzhong, Professor Zhang Zhizhong, Professor Han Lihong and Professor Wang Xinxin; Zhang Zhizhong, head of the translation department, Han Lihong, head of the Japanese department, Liu Jiping, head of the French department, Gu Jiawei, head of the Spanish Department, Hu Jing, head of the Portuguese department, Yang Lin, head of the Italian department, and other department heads, professional teachers and administrative teachers.
In addition, Zhao Wei, a former Japanese major alumnus of the Department of foreign languages of Nankai University in 1979, and Fan Xihe, a former Japanese major alumnus of the Department of foreign languages of Nankai University in 1983, attended the welcome conference as special guests. 380 graduate and doctoral students of grade 2021 of the school of foreign languages participated in the seminar. Xiang Yu, deputy secretary of the Party committee and vice president of the college, presided over the meeting.
The conference began with a solemn national anthem.
First of all, on behalf of all the faculty, Yan Guodong, Dean and doctoral supervisor of the school of foreign languages, extended a warm welcome to all the freshmen who joined the school of foreign languages, and introduced the talent training connotation, scheme, concept and goal of Nankai foreign languages college to the students. He hoped that the students would aim at the needs of the country and serve the needs of the country, clarify the scheme of self-development, obtain learning motivation and establish life goals.
For undergraduate students, Dean Yan puts forward the following six expectations: love the major, find out the personal orientation and establish the goal as soon as possible, enrich knowledge, eliminate interference, devote yourself to learning, cultivate good living habits and improve living ability, and establish a good relationship with teachers. For master students, he put forward several expectations, such as establishing academic interest, improving academic research ability, completing excellent papers in line with academic norms and maintaining excellent language ability. He pointed out that doctoral students should have three realms, namely, the realm of scholars, the realm of innovation, and the realm of selflessness.
Then, the doctoral tutor and the heads of departments came to the stage, wishing them success in life and learning in Nankai. The teachers will accompany the students as their guides.
Mr. Fan Xihe, a former student of Japanese major, delivered a speech as an alumni representative. He shared his learning experience and the way of life development, pointing out that “You have made your era. Foreign language is a subject, not a tool, and learning it well is the mainstay.” in addition, he talked about his view on foreign language, “one should not forget the root”, hoping that students can master a solid foundation of Chinese while learning foreign language, Master a broader field and life space through a foreign language.
Hou Dianfeng, a postdoctoral teacher of the English Department, spoke as a teacher representative. He shared his school experience and encouraged the students to “cherish the current learning time”. He pointed out that the school of foreign languages has put forward a broad learning platform for students and suggested that students “calm down and learn something down-to-earth” in order to shoulder the mission of the times and respond to the call of the new era.
Huang Mingtuo of the Russian Department spoke as a representative of new teachers. He first pointed out that there is an essential difference between college learning and high school learning, and put forward valuable suggestions on how to learn a foreign language well, such as “three pillars”, “Four Consciousness” and “five skills”, so as to encourage freshmen to strengthen their ideals and beliefs and remain committed to their choices.
Guo Weijing, a 2019 master of Japanese language and literature, spoke as a representative of veteran students. She shared her views on Nankai’s “patriotic” spirit and her feelings and gains in life, and encouraged freshmen to study hard and practice, be determined to serve the country, and be talents with “the public morality of patriotism and love the group and the ability to serve the society”.
Zhang Ziyu, a 2021 undergraduate majoring in Japanese, spoke as a representative of freshmen. She expressed her respect and longing for Nankai Institute of foreign languages, expressed her gratitude to her parents, teachers and the school country, and asked herself and her classmates three questions: What can we bring to Nankai? What can it bring to our country and society? What can it bring to this era? Finally, she hoped that she and her classmates would “know China and serve China”.
Zhao Wei, a 1979 Japanese major alumnus, has always been concerned about his alma mater since his graduation for 38 years. He has repeatedly nurtured Nankai in different forms, cared about the development and construction of the school and college, and set up a “Zhao Wei scholarship” to reward students with excellent character and learning in Nankai Japanese department. At the conference, Zhao Wei alumni presented certificates and bonuses to five 2021 Japanese students who won the “Zhao Wei scholarship”.
Finally, Wang Kai, vice president of the school of foreign languages, read the list of undergraduate class tutors, and Mu Xiangwang, Secretary of the Party committee, issued a letter of appointment to the 2021 class tutors.
“The coast of the Bohai Sea, the harbor of the Baihe River...” the 2021 orientation meeting of the school of foreign languages of Nankai University was successfully concluded in the solemn school song.
In the future, teachers will stand together with students from other colleges, strive together, improve together, provide guidance on the dream pursuit of Nankai students, and write another good story of friendship between teachers and students. They will create new brilliance with new students!
