On the afternoon of June 11st, Professor Wang Dongfeng, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages of Sun Yat-sen University, chief expert on major research projects of the Ministry of Education, winner of the special allowance of the State Council, and the doctoral tutor, was invited by the Center for International Communication of Chinese Culture of College of Foreign Languages to give an online academic lecture titled Retrieving the Beauty in Sound: Research on Translation Methods of the Sound Meter of English Poems for teachers and students in our college. More than 100 teachers and students from Nankai University and other universities attended the lecture through the Tencent conference platform.
Professor Wang conducted an in-depth analysis of the translation methods of the sound meter and their feasibility in the process of translating western metrical verses into Chinese. He summarized the three paradigms that have been developed in the Chinese translation of Western metrical verses over the past century, shared his thoughts and attempts on the translatability of the sound meter in the practice of translating English poems into Chinese, and put forward the idea of to substitute level and oblique tones for iambic. The teachers and students attending the meeting were deeply inspired, and had enthusiastic interactions and exchanges with Professor Wang on different issues and at different levels, and they all expressed that they have benefited a lot.
