Professor Franz Pöchhacker from the University of Vienna held an online academic lecture for teachers and students of the College of Foreign Languages

On the afternoon of April 16th, Professor Franz Pöchhacker from the College of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Vienna, Austria, gave a wonderful online academic lecture to the teachers and students of the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University. The lecture was funded by the Nankai Global Online Lecture  project of Nankai University and was presided over by Professor Miao Ju, Director of the Translation Studies Center of the College of Foreign Languages. The lecture was conducted through Zoom. Nearly 80 teachers and students attended the lecture, and some postgraduates and doctors attended the lecture in the conference room 204 of the college. Professor Wang Chuanying from the MTI Education Center of the College of Foreign Languages expressed his gratitude towards Professor Franz Pöchhacker.

The topic of the lecture is Learning to Interpret: Research Methods and Paths. Professor Franz Pöchhacker gave a detailed account of the evolution history, conceptual categories, research fields, model construction, research methods, and research topics of interpretation research. Combined with the development history of interpretation research, Professor Franz Pöchhacker reviewed the representative figures that appeared in interpretation research, clarified the main types of interpreting and theoretical categories involved in interpretation research, and defined some main research areas, such as the semantic transformation, multimodal text generation, cognitive process, and interaction and coordination between cultures. Finally, Professor Franz Pöchhacker presented the interpretation research models and research paradigms of several international scholars, and especially answered some questions about the methods, themes and development trends of interpretation research.

Professor Franz Pöchhacker’s lectures are rich in content, clear in structure and well-argued. During the lecture, Professor Franz Pöchhacker interacted frequently with the audience and answered the questions raised by teachers and students.

Professor Miao Ju expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Professor Franz Pöchhacker for his lecture, and looked forward to more academic exchanges and guidance between Professor Franz Pöchhacker and the teachers and students of the College of Foreign Languages. Since Professor Miao Ju visited the College of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Vienna in 2012, scholars from the two universities have carried out scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges. In 2016, with the efforts of Professor Susanna Weglin, Vice President of the University of Vienna and Academician of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Professor Gerhard Pudding of the College of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Vienna, the two universities signed a cooperation agreement. This academic exchange also reflects the in-depth development of the cooperative relationship between the two universities, and has guiding significance for the teaching and research work of the MTI interpretation of the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University.
