Recently, “Approaching Famous Journals in China” Lecture, which was hosted by the Postgraduate Student Affairs Department of the Party Committee of Nankai University and was undertaken by the Postgraduate Student Association of College of Foreign Languages, was held in College of Foreign Languages. Professor Feng Zhiqiang, Executive Dean of Translation and Intercultural Communication Research Institute in Tianjin Foreign Studies University and Deputy Editor-in-chief of the journal, Research on Translations from Chinese delivered a lecture entitled “Lin Yutang and the Cultural Confidence”
Feng Zhiqiang unfolded his lecture centering on four questions, namely, “Who is Lin Yutang?”, “What is the cultural confidence?”, “How can we achieve the cultural confidence?”, and “How can we be confident of our culutre?” He mentioned that “setting foot in Oriental and Western culture and commenting heart and soul on things all over the world” is Lin Yutang’s evaluation of himself. The ins and outs of the cultural confidence has four procedures which are awareness of culture, confidence in culture, awareness of the language and confidence in the language (confidence in mother tongue-foreign language-translation.) Feng Zhiqiang introduced that awareness of culture is the cognition of people’s own culture; confidence in culture refers to the confidence in national culture, traditional culture and cultural exchanges which is put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping; awareness of the language contains three stages, namely, adaption, reflection and application which correspond to our attitude towards our own language, in other words, the sense of inferiority, awareness and confidence. Feng Zhiqiang also answered the question “How can we achieve the cultural confidence?” through introducing Lin Yutang’s rich experience, multiple identities and recognition of others and concluded the cultural confidence embodied by Lin Yutang in various aspects.
After the lecture, students were eager to ask questions which were patiently answered by Feng Zhiqiang and they widely expressed that they reaped substantial benefits from this activity.
