On March 21, 2021, the Campus Selection Competition of Nankai University in 2021 China Universities Debating Championship was held in the Students Activity Center of Nankai University. This competition, which was hosted by China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters Project Management Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration and undertaken by College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University and APEX Debate Education Association, invited outstanding student representatives in Nankai University, the former president of APEX Debate Education Association and the vice-president to be the public review and judges.
This competition adopts the British parliamentary debating system. Each team consists of two debaters. 4 teams compete in each round in the contest where they attain the rating of 1-2-3-4 as well as cumulate scorings according to team performance. After the registration and preparation, a total of 7 teams were qualified for the competition. The final consists of 3 rounds of points race and a qualifying round. Contestants received the debate topic, in terms of various aspects of contents such as government policies, gender equality and the philosophy of life, and started to prepare for it 15 minutes before the beginning of debate. They not only displayed their excellent command of language but also made a conspicuous show of brilliant ideas. After the contest, a champion team, Sailor Moon and two second place winning teams, Spicy Bacon and To Be Decided came into being. Two contestants of the champion team, Liu Jie, an undergraduate student in the class of 2018 and Zhao Yuting, an undergraduate student in the class of 2019 in College of Foreign Languages will participate in the selection competition of North China on behalf of Nankai University.
After the competition, contestants expressed their enthusiasm about debate and said that during the preparation of the contest, the large amount of reading and thinking greatly enriched their knowledge and the double requirement of input and output highly promoted their language ability.
It is reported that this competition held by China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters Project Management Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration shaped international talents who could lead the development in the new era through guiding students’ discussion of international center issues and pluralistic culture. College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University has undertaken campus selection competitions of high-level national foreign language contests for many times and cultivated a legion of contestants and teams making outstanding achievements in national competitions and gained honors such as “Prize for The Best Organization.”
