2020 Workshop of Scholarship of RightOempower Teaching and Learning Successfully Comes to an End

At 7:30 pm. on December 16th, 2020, the last, namely the 9th Workshop of Scholarship of RightOempower Teaching and Learning which was jointly hosted by English Department in the College of Foreign Languages, Foreign Language Teaching and Teacher Development Center and the RightOempower English Teaching Team was held on “Tencent Meeting” platform on time. About 120 teachers, doctoral students and graduate students from more than 40 colleges and universities, such as Nankai University, Shandong University, Sichuan University, Jilin University, Ocean University of China, Southwest Jiaotong Univeristy, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Hunan Normal University, Northeast Normal University, Liaoning University, Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin Medical University, North China Electronic Power University, Hainan University, Qingdao University, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Tianjin University of Technology, Chongqing Normal University, Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, Guangxi University of Nationalities, Civil Aviation University of China, Beijing Information Science and Technology University, Tianjin University of Commerce, Jishou University, Hanjiang University, North China University of Science and Technology, Qujing Normal, Shanghai Normal University TIANHUA College University, Kashgar University, Jiangsu University of Technology, Hefei Normal University, Nanchang Normal University, Shanghai Normal University TIANHUA College, Zhengzhou Business University and Zhengzhou Electric Power Technology University, attended this academic feast which lasted for two hours.

This Workshop was chaired by Jia Li, a doctoral student from the School of Foreign Studies of Ocean University of China. Professor Zhang Wenzhong, Doctoral Supervisor in the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University and Doctor Xu Chengping from the School of Foreign Studies of Tianjin Normal University assumed the judges. Doctor Wang Dongyan from the English Department in the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University and Professor Zhang Wenzhong successively reported on their topic.  

Doctor Wang Dongyan reported her ideas of RightOempower with the title of “An Action Study on the Grammar Teaching for Strengthening English Major Students’ Abilities to Independent Study and Research” from four aspects, research background, research questions, measures and plans, as well as comments and reflections, and her two times of action research on grammar teaching among lower-grade students of English major. The action research reported by her confirms that gramma teaching specially for lower-grade students meets students’ demand. It is effective to guide students to develop extracurricular independent study in the gramma learning and it is workable to organize students to conduct group research project about gramma.

The title of Professor Zhang Wenzhong’s report is “New Analysis of Cultivation Standards of English Talents.” His elucidation of three aspects: persistently inquiring education; cultivation standards of English talents; and ideas of RightOempower inspires his consideration of four orientations of English talent cultivation, namely, “personality”, “quality”,” knowledge” and “ability”. Then, he elaborated the connotative meaning of “Geyangzhineng (investigation and cultivation of knowledge and skills)” and made an fabulous analogy between four orientations of “Geyangzhineng” and “skeletal system”, “musculature”, “energy system” and “nervous system” of human body kinematic scheme. Finally, he appealed to front-line teachers for putting the idea of RightOempower into practice, designing and implementing the efficient teaching activities and tasks with “the integration of doing, learning and using” following the “the integration of double three principle” and promoting the cultivation and enhancement of English talents’ “Geyangzhineng.” 

In the question-and-answer section, teachers and students got into detailed communication and had a discussion with Doctor Wang Dongyan and Professor Zhang Wenzhong about several topics, such as group research project and research methodology of gramma teaching, the cultivation of students’ ability to independent study, individual differences of students, textbooks of gramma teaching, learning portfolio assessment, the support and effective ways of English talent cultivation course, cross-cultural personality and curriculum politics.

In the comment section, Professor Zhang Wenzhong highly praised the professional dedication of Dr Wang Dongyuan in his comments on this teacher, pointed out that Dr Wang introduced inquiry-based project teaching into gramma teaching and her action research based on teaching reform had a great significance on teachers’ own development and the construction of courses and the major. He also appealed to more teachers for being courageous to introduce new teaching ideas, actively conducting the teaching reform and action research, improving teaching benefits and promoting the beneficial cycle of teaching and research integration in order to gain a victory in both sides. Doctor Xu Chengping fully approved the project-based gramma teaching with circumstance setting conducted by Wang Dongyan and shared her experience and perceptions of projected-based teaching. Hao Yunzhi, Director of English Department in the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University praised Professor Zhang Wenzhong for his putting forward so many new ideas about English talents cultivation, which was endorsed by teachers and students in this workshop.

Since August 5th, 2020, a total of 9 workshops including 18 distinct reports of specific topic have been successfully held. 2020 Workshop of Scholarship of RightOempower Teaching and Learning successfully came to an end. The workshop which was initiated and organized by Professor Zhang Wenzhong and coordinated by the doctoral student Zhai Yu, in line with the ideas of “maintaining public-spiritedness and all-round capability, RightOempower, scholarship of teaching and learning and integrated development”, attracted four teaching reform teams from Nankai University, Tianjin Normal University, Qingdao University of Science and Technology and Qu Jing Normal University to participate in. And the workshop which built a platform for exchange, interaction, mutual learning and promoting among teachers and students who put the idea of RightOempower into practice and make efforts to integrate teaching and research, played an important and constructive role in fostering the further study and effective practice of RightOempower Teaching.

Finally, the chairperson Jia Li and Professor Zhang Wenzhong respectively made a summary of 2020 and gave a speech about looking ahead to 2021. They expressed their heartfelt thanks to all the teachers and students who attended the workshops in 2020 for their contributions, expected the online and offline gathering of more teachers and students to happen soon in 2021 and hoped the discussion and research of the scholarship of teaching and learning could scale new heights. At Jia Li’s suggestion, teachers and students in the workshop took a group photo. 2020 Workshop of Scholarship of RightOempower Teaching and Learning which provided a lot of valuable knowledge came to an end with a reluctant farewell. In 2021, let us go into action together for RightOempower!
