The College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University Holds the Annual Meeting of Tianjin Association of Linguistics in 2020

On December 5th, the annual meeting of Tianjin Association of Linguistics in 2020 was held in Nankai University. This meeting, which was hosted by Tianjin Association of Linguistics and undertaken by the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University in both online and offline forms, received a total of 128 papers and had more than 80 association members including meeting staffs as on-the-spot participants alongside about 4000 online audience at home and abroad watching a live broadcast at the same time.

Professor Yan Guodong, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony.

Li Bing, Professor in the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University and President of Tianjin Association of Linguistics announced the opening of the meeting and gave an address.

The opening ceremony was presided by Guo Jia, Associate Professor in the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University, Secretary-general of Tianjin Association of Linguistics.

Liu Danqing, Research Fellow in Institute of Linguistics in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Li Xingde, Chief Research Fellow in Institute of Theoretical Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Science in Tianjin Normal University and Professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shi Feng, Professor in the School of Literature in Nankai University and Shi Xiangdong, Professor in the College of Chinese Language and Culture in Nankai University gave keynote lectures in the meeting. Titles of lectures are “Non-independent Views on Linguistic Inventory Typology”, “On Children’s Acquisition of Interrogative Sentence in Shanghainese”, “Ten Questions about the Retroflexed Final in Beijing Dialect” and “On the Significance of Rhyme of Modern Poetry for Chinese Prosody Studies.” These reports aroused lively discussions among on-the-spot participants.

There are three symposiums with topics of “Phonatory Aerodynamics”, “Psycholinguistics” and “Studies on English Teaching Problems in Colleges and Universities” and nine group report seminars in the meeting. Participants had in-depth exchanges on topics of phonetics and phonology, syntax and semantics, philology and documentation, language teaching and acquisition, language and culture, etc.

After discussions in all group report seminars came to an end, Professor Shi Feng, Shi Xiangdong, Zeng Xiaoyu, Ran Qibin and Zhang Wenzhong from Nankai University and Professor Shi Xiujuan from Tianjin Normal University read out winner lists of papers of high quality in the annual meeting of Tianjin Association of Linguistics in 2020 online. “The Etymology of ‘Bage (八哥)’”by Teacher Chen Hong from School of International Education in Tianjin University, “The Gist of Shengyun tongran ji (聲韻同然集)” by Ren Wenbo from the School of Literature in Tianjin Normal University won the first prize for teachers, another 4 papers second prize and 8 papers third prize. “‘To Be a Verb or Not to Be’: the Rhythmic Characteristics and Register Mechanism Derived from Syntax Related to Contracted Form” by Student Yang Huiting from the School of Foreign Languages and Literature in Tianjin University, “A Corpus Based Study on Chinese EFL Learners’ Syntactic Complexity in the Academic Writing” by Liu Wenyan from the College of Humanities in Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, “Analysis of the Pronunciation of Rimurixi Words in Liaoning Dialect from the Perspective of Geographical Linguistics” by Liu Jinghan from the School of Literature in Nankai University won the first prize for students, another 8 papers won the second prize and 13 papers the third prize.

Professor Li Bing from Nankai University made a brief summary for this meeting. He expressed his thanks to the organizing committee and preparatory committee of the annual meeting for such a careful arrangement and student volunteers’ enthusiastic service and hoped that members of Tianjin Association of Linguistics would continue actively participating academic activities. This annual meeting witnessed the exchanges of scholarly ideas with academic enthusiasm. And it fully displayed the latest research results of Tianjin linguists and peers in China and achieved a great success with plenty commendation.
