In order to further promote the co-research of teachers and students, effectively improve the construction level and strengthen the co-construction of the branch, and lead the joint development, the Party branch of the Teacher Development Center of Nankai University and the first party branch of the 2019 postgraduate students of the College of Foreign Languages launched a co-construction activity on November 5th, 2020. This event invited Li Xia, the deputy dean of the School of Foreign Languages in Nankai University and the director of the Public English Teaching Department, to give a special training lecture to all English teachers in the second high school of Altay District in the form of remote video conference.
The Second High School of Altay District is the counterpart assistance school of Nankai University's postgraduate teaching team. Since 2003, Nankai University has sent 18 batches of 203 members of postgraduate teaching team to the school to carry out teaching activities. The Second High School of Altay District has attached great importance to teacher training in recent years, and has invited famous teachers and experts from inside and outside Xinjiang to carry out professional training for local teachers, but there is still deficiency in the training of English teachers. The first party branch of the 2019 postgraduate students of our School and the Party Branch of the Teacher Development Center jointly carried out educational assistance activities, aiming to rely on the advantageous resources of the effective teaching team of Nankai University (NKET), give full play to their professional expertise, help high school English teachers in the West update their educational concepts, and improve their teaching ability and teaching level.
In the lecture, Li Xia concentrated on the O-AMAS model, using effective teaching methods such as peer teaching, simulated scenes, visual presentation, exploration and cooperation, and games to bring a lively training lecture to all teachers and students. According to Li Xia, teachers should recognize the problems in classroom teaching, guide students to set up learning goals, and create a learner-centered classroom with four characteristics. Furthermore, the students should be activated and diversified teaching should be used to meet the learning needs of diversified subjects. Besides, the teachers are also required to enrich the content and format of the assessment, and make timely and effective summaries, so as to truly achieve teaching in an appropriate way and learning effectively, and become a supporter, participant, builder and witness of student learning.
After the lecture, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Altay No. 2 Senior High School, Mo Lunbo said, “Nankai University which is renowned both at home and abroad has continually sent outstanding volunteer teachers to our school for 18 years. It is with the help of Nankai University that our school, a high school in a small town in North-west China, is able to quickly develop. We admire the aim of Nankai University, ‘knowing China and serving China’, and are looking forward to more cooperation with Nankai University in the future to strengthen the educational co-development. Besides, welcome to Altay in Xinjiang Province which is known as the ‘golden mountain and silver river’ to experience the distinct ethnic customs and enjoy beautiful natural scenery.” English teachers from Altay No. 2 Senior High School who attended the lecture said that they learned a lot from this lecture which was practical and instructive. And they would put the advanced teaching ideas learned from it into their future teaching practice and constantly improve their teaching ability.
Guo Weijing, Secretary of the First Party Branch of the Graduate Students of Class 2019 in College of Foreign Languages, pointed out that effective teaching methods took full advantage of game elements and flipped class mode to make class interesting and render learning effective. In the process of teaching, the excellent art of it which includes cultivation of communicative ability, exercise of experimental learning with both knowledge acquisition and practice and the use of flexible form of evaluation embodies the combination of advanced teaching ideas and rich teaching experience. Besides, we will pay more attention to the team building and refine the distinctive bilingual publicizing activity of the party branch in order to make more primary and secondary school students improve their English ability while passing on patriotism. This lecture is a precious experience for many student party members who intend to engage in educational work and are receiving education. Participants of the lecture also put forward many new suggestions for improving the practice of party spirit of student party members through some real teaching cases.
It is reported that “the Effective Teaching Design and Implementation Based on O-AMAS Model” co-developed by Nankai Effective Teaching Team (NKET) has been popularized in about 100 universities and applied in the teaching practice of more than 50 disciplines in Nankai University. Currently, it is planned to be promoted to high schools and middle schools nationwide.
