On October 24th, the “New Starting Point for Minority Languages”, an activity organized by the College of Foreign Languages in Nankai University was held in the Seventh Building. 13 lecturers from eight majors including French, Japanese, Russian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Arabic, together with 20 teaching assistants offered a professional and interesting language course to lovers of foreign languages among the university.
This class contains 8 languages and 9 classes. A total of 271 people have applied and 116 people have been selected as students who will be taught free of charge by excellent peers or tutors in the higher grades of the College of Foreign Languages.
In the course, the lecturers and teaching assistants use slides, songs, videos and various forms to carry out class exercises such as listening and repeating, and oral communication. In this way, not only can students lay a good foundation for the start of a new language, they will also approach the foreign culture behind the language, feel the charm of language learning and wander in the world of culture with the students of our school.
In the process, both the lecturers and teaching assistants had deep feelings. Mao Fenglin, a 2017 undergraduate who has just won the national scholarship and served as a lecturer in the Portuguese Department, said: The conveying of knowledge is a joyful process. I will continue to work hard to prepare lessons and pass on the content that I most want to share to the students learning Portuguese. Besides, Wang Wei, a teaching assistant from the Russian Department of the Class of 2020, also gave credits to this activity: “I am very glad to see that the students ask questions and quest for resources actively. I hope to work with you to make progress together in the process of learning foreign languages.”
The New Starting Point for Minority Languages is regarded as a non-profit language teaching activity for all students. It has been launched by the Youth Volunteer Service and Social Practice Center of the School of Foreign Languages in Nankai University. After nearly ten years of development, this activity has offered all courses of non-English languages in the College of Foreign Languages; and this year, it will cooperate with Mu Dan Academy to create a foreign language + class, which will bring learners a more wonderful learning experience.
