Students from Nankai University Make Outstanding Achievements in the Northern Division of the National Interpreting Contest

Few days ago, the curtain descended on the competition in the Northern Division of the 9th National Interpreting Contest. This context was hosted by the Translators Association of China, with the Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Language Service in the Translators Association of China and Transemantix Institution of Interpretation and Translation as its undertaking agents. Several students from Nankai University have made outstanding achievements in this contest and one of them entered the national final.

Affected by the COVID-19, this year's competition was held online with more than 200 contestants from nine provinces such as Tianjin, Hebei, Henan and Shandong. Kong Meng, a postgraduate student majoring in English Interpreting in the Class of 2019; Lin Xiying, an undergraduate student majoring in Translation and Interpreting in the Class of 2016; Cao Xinyi, an undergraduate student majoring in Translation and Interpreting in the Class of 2017; and Liu Yi, a postgraduate student majoring in English Interpreting in the Class of 2019 in the College, won respectively a first prize, a second prize, a third prize and an honorable mention. Among them, Kong Meng entered the final of the 9th National Interpreting Contest.

The contest in the Northern Division was divided into two rounds, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The form of the competition in the morning was E-C translation, the themes of which involved international oil price, the roadmap of energy sources in Mongolia, and popular music, etc. The form of the competition in the afternoon was C-E translation. The themes included the cooperation between China and Africa, fossil energy and climate change, VR technology and the scientific research education, etc. Relying on their good command of English and psychological quality, students from Nankai University successfully completed the contest.

It is reported that the National Interpreting Contest (English) is one of the most influential national competition of interpretation in China. Since its inception, the contest has attracted wide attention from all sides for its authority, impartiality and media transparency. It has also played a significant role in enhancing university students’ ability of practical application in interpretation and cross-cultural communication. In the previous competition in Tianjin Division, 4 contestants from our university won the first, the second, and the third prizes. Besides, Li Yi won the Award of the Interpreter with Elegant Demeanor in the online voting.
