On the occasion of May 4th—Youth Day in 2020, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of CPC, made an address to the young people of the new era, stressing that the young should consolidate their ambition, stand by the public side, and cultivate their skills to devote themselves to the country. Secretary Xi pointed out that youth is brilliant through tempering, and life is sublimated by struggle. Secretary Xi’s message enlightened the direction and path for the growth and development of the youth, enabling the youth to feel enthusiastic and confident to the future.
Facing the sudden test of the coronavirus pandemic, young students of CFL responded proactively to the call from the CPC and actively participated in the pandemic prevention and control. They showed no fears to hardships and dangers, charged forward, and contributed the power of youth, demonstrating their accountability with practical actions.
Conducting youth duty with volunteer services
Youth of CFL have fully demonstrated their strength. In the volunteer service of pandemic prevention, they have showed the attainment of students of CFL. During the pandemic, a total of 547 students participated in the pandemic prevention and control volunteer activities, adding up to 1591 hours of service, with application rate of the Voluntary Exchange App exceeding 90%. Among them, 35 students took the initiative to enroll in the “NKU Voluntary Translator Army for Pandemic Prevention”, arriving at Tianjin Binhai International Airport to provide language services for inbound flights and passengers. At the same time, 10 young teachers and students were on call 24 hours a day, to offer remote language translation services for the centralized quarantine zones of 4 Districts: Nankai, Hongqiao, Beichen, and Jizhou, which has received special reports from more than 10 domestic media such as China Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Education News. 292 students devoted to grassroots voluntary activities and actively went to the community (village) to check in and participate in pandemic prevention propaganda, temperature measurement and other works. 34 students signed up for public welfare tutors, solving the worries of the most beautiful “countermarch people” through online courses. Doctoral candidate Zhang Yawen and other student teachers received media reports from Tianjin TV and other media due to their outstanding performances.
Congregating youth power via devotion to the public
Students of CFL are committed to serving public and firmly combining personal aspiration with the destiny and future of the whole nation. During the pandemic, students of CFL have contributed greatly to the pandemic prevention through a variety of ways. They donated 30,410 RMB spontaneously and gave 623 pieces of medical supplies to different provincial and municipal foundations, hospitals, alumni associations, and other institutions, which is equivalent to 10,281 RMB. Student leaders made or cover anti-pandemic songs in Chinses or foreign languages, to show determination of defeating pandemic through encouraging songs. Undergraduate Qiang Yuexian spontaneously organized students from ten universities, with Nankai University, Tianjin University, Beijing Foreign Studies University included, to assist supply platforms of medical supplies in Hubei Province and provide over 80% of the reserve staffs for the information group of “E-Voluntary Supply and Demand Platform for Pandemic Prevention”. The students of CFL stayed true to their original missions and contributed the value of youth to the victory of the pandemic prevention and control.
Illustrating Youth Responsibility through Communist Youth League and Student Organization
Students of CFL work actively to participate in online activities and use their foreign language expertise to shoulder their responsibilities, so as to cultivate patriotism and broaden their global horizons. During the pandemic, student organizations of CFL have taken initiative and proactively promoted the work of the Communist Youth League, and reformed the forms of activities under the background of the “Internet+” Ere. They have overcome multiple difficulties and organized a total of 93 thematic activities concerning the pandemic prevention, with 4186 people participating. In order to tell Chinese stories well, the Postgraduate Union has launched a special activity named “The Most Beautiful Recitation” for international encouragement and released the “Chorus of the Community of the Shared Future for Mankind” in 3 language, to fully exert the foreign language expertise. The Organization Department of Communist Youth League conducted the free creation in multiple languages and multiple forms, showing the support and aid under the circumstance of shared future for mankind. The Propaganda Department of Communist Youth League produced multilingual posters of international friendship. The Student Union reviewed the key events during the pandemic through the anti-epidemic comic diary, praising the dedication of medical workers. The Branch of the Party launched the cloud “Micro-Party Education Competition” for pandemic prevention, giving a full play of the role as ideological guidance. The Translation Center, cooperating with the International Exchange Office of NKU, made full use of foreign language expertise to complete the translation of various anti-epidemic materials. The Vocational Organization actively contacted with enterprises to build an online double-selection meeting platform for graduates.
Students of CFL use their personal expertise to shoulder the responsibilities of young people through student associations. Amidst the pandemic, each student association of CFL exerted its edges and characteristics to innovate the form of activities, centered by the theme of pandemic prevention and control. They have carried out 6 thematic activities about anti-pandemic, with a total of 175 participants. The Taekwondo Association shared videos such as Taekwondo legwork and endurance training to encourage students to stay fit and healthy at home. Apex English Debate Academy launched an online symposium on the epidemic situation and the trend of global politics, expressing the profoundness on the superiority of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, and the discussion and reflection on the comments of all parties during the pandemic.
Students of CFL have taken the initiative to stand out during the pandemic, exerting their youthful strength through multiple channels, acting boldly, and helping the success of pandemic prevention. While cultivating themselves to be talents of foreign affairs with Foreign Language Specialty, Cultivation of Humanity, Vision of Internationality, Tie to China, and Nankai Characteristics, students of CFL are more firm in their convictions, stand on the side the people, work hard to develop skills, and always keep going forward with diligent attitude, to contribute youth power to national development and the great rejuvenation of Chinse nation.
