Since the outbreak of COVID-19, CFL has carefully implemented the important instructions from General Secretary Xi Jinping and the deployment from the school, acting promptly to take the initiative to protect teachers and students’ physical and mental health, maintain the normality of teaching and academic research, and construct a comprehensive outbreak control line with diversified measures.
Check All staffs Health Condition and Pay Close Attention to the Status and Needs of Teachers and Students
Since January 21st, CFL has established close ties with teachers and students from Wuhan and Hubei and begun to give an overall survey over the situation of all students and in-service and retired teachers and staffs, setting up a daily dynamic reporting mechanism to ensure timely and accurate control of teachers and students current status. CFL attached great importance to the situation of teachers in Hubei Province, the path of teachers returning to Tianjin successively from other places, and their self-isolation after returning to Tianjin and daily self-temperature measurement. The college has compiled a “Temperature Check Sheet for Teachers and Staff Returning to Tianjin” to fully grasp the status. It also established a WeChat group for overseas students and a group for students in Hubei Province to pass down the information about the outbreak timely and try to erase students’ fears via one-to-one contact and care. For the poor students in the pandemic areas, CFL has released the Young Crops Fund and Heart-Warming Fund and opened a green pass to help the students and their families in the pandemic area to overcome the difficulties in time. In response to the psychological problems and job-searching confusion during the outbreak, the college leaders joined the Nankai University Pandemic Mental Health Service Team to provide teachers, students, students’ parents, and the public with free online psychological counseling. As for the committee members of the Youth League, they joined the online career planning consultation and launched the online course of workplace, named “We Say”, inviting outstanding alumni to share their experiences about postgraduate recommendation, study abroad, and employment.
Perfect Management and Safeguard the Line of Pandemic Prevention in the Campus
CFL immediately established the comprehensive coordination working WeChat group and property management working WeChat group to ensure the safety of the college. On January 25, the college closed the teaching building for the school’s requirements, posted a notice at the gate of the college and notified people through WeChat group. The repairing work site of College Library Information Center was also closed, with construction suspended, access prohibited, and water and electricity power cut off, to reduce the risk of novel coronavirus pneumonia infection. In addition, the college strengthens the personal protection and work requirements of property personnel, requiring staffs to wear masks, measure body temperature, sterilize the teaching building daily, and report personal status and working conditions to ensure safety.
Promotion and Guidance to Boost the Morale of Teachers and Students to Fight Against the Outbreak
CFL has used WeChat group and WeChat public account to pass down the development of the epidemic situation, to promote the order of the government and the epidemic prevention arrangements from the school and college, and popularize the knowledge and requirements of epidemic prevention to the students and teachers. By the columns like “Education amidst the Outbreak” and “Tips for Outbreak Prevention”, CFL has guided students to do personal protection, reckon rationally, and arrange time reasonably. With the initiation of columns such as “I am the Vanguard of Pandemic Prevention”, CFL works vigorously to promote advanced individuals and deeds in fighting against the outbreak and guide teachers and students to make active contributions to combating the outbreak. It has launched a series of Public Account passages “One is More Patriotic Abroad” and produced a video that records the overseas student give their encouragement to the fight against COVID-19 in China, strengthening the faith of students and teachers that we shall win the outbreak.
Volunteers Assemble to Aid the Frontline of Pandemic Prevention in Multiple Channels
Confronting the pandemic, global alumnus of CFL around gathered quickly and formed the “Donation WeChat Group for Alumnus in Hubei”. Alumnus scattered in different industries around the world with different languages proficiency exerted their advantages to raise funds and materials globally, expanded the purchase channels of healthcare material, coordinated the material distribution and volunteer services, and offered translation or legal consulting services, etc. An efficient alumni network for mutual assistance was formed. The Translation Center of CFL has cooperated with the International Academic Exchange Office of NKU to set up an “Anti-epidemic Translation Team”, then intensively carried out the translation of academic documents related to COVID-19, making the special contribution from language learners in order to keep abreast of the latest medical trends, grasp the laws of disease development, and win the battle against epidemic. Besides, many students of CFL have participated in community entry and exit management, the information registration of household organized by the township government, and hospital material verification, to contribute their strength to pandemic prevention.
Overall Planning for Online Education and Research Promotion
In the face of COVID-19, the Department of Public English Teaching of CFL attaches great importance to the requirements of the “no suspension of education” issued by the Ministry of Education of China and the Academic Affairs Department of Nankai University and the “Work Plan for Undergraduate Teaching during the Delayed Homecoming in 2020 Spring Semester of Nankai University”. It has acted quickly, set up an online course research and development team, and formulate a three-step plan—trying while learning, overall planning, and collective collaboration, to make sure the orderly development of public English teaching throughout the school. In terms of undergraduate and graduate education, the college designates programs respectively, to promote teachers and instructors of different majors to use various network resources to carry out effective teaching and scientific research.
