The Foreign Language Drama Society’s annual public performance was held in the auditorium of the main building, Bailitai campus. Two main classic clips were put on: Thunderstorm and The Fair Lady in English. President of the CFL Yan Guodong attended the performance. He addressed “the rise and fall of drama” to the audience and extended his best wishes to the performance and the future development of the Society.
The first episode was Cao Yu’s Thunderstorm, of which the English version was hammer out by the professional teachers and the members of the Society for the restoration of the original work with refined language. The appealing scene bring the audience back to that age when lovely characters darted into the platform. As The story ended with a gun blast, the thundering applause was bursting out from the audience overwhelming the sound of “Thunderstorm”.
The second episode was George Bernard Shaw’s The Fair Lady, where the actors mimicked the characters perfectly with their superb acting ability. After the performance, the host interviewed those actors, making the audience hilarious with witty remarks.
President of the Foreign Language Drama Society and a senior English student Zhang Cong introduced that the performance this time is not a replication of the script, but the reproduction adding actors’ understanding of their own; that since the early 1980s, the outstanding classical drama Rickshaw Boy and Thunderstorm was acted by our Society, which went to abroad in a cooperation with American schools; that going with the trend of Chinese culture “going global”, our Society would take the responsibility of promoting Chinese traditional culture going global through the performances of classical dramas.
