On the afternoon of December 13rd, the academic lecture “Trends in Global Politics” was held by the Department of Italian of the College of Foreign Languages, Nankai University. The speaker was Vice President of LUISS University Raffaele Marchetti, who focused on the international relations and theory of global politics.
The lecture begins with the international political situation in chronological order. the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989 represented as the end of the Cold War and the union of the western and eastern regions. Pro. Marchetti, starting from the occasion, introduced major global political events, ranging from the formation of WTO in 1995 and the accession of Russia into G7 in 1997. He also emphasized that the 21st century stood at the turning point of global political trend.
Afterwards, Pro. Marchetti gave a introduction of the world map made by Europeans in Middle Age. On one hand, the map showed that the world is a whole and there is close link among all countries and regions. On the other hand, it was shown that the world is Europocentric. Moreover, some important international organizations and influential large cities were introduced. He used diagrams to illustrate the GDP and PPP of the United States, EU and China and stated that China enjoyed a strong momentum for growth in the new situation. At last, he pointed out that with some uncertainties in the international political structure, a new world landscape was taking into shape, thereby imposing some negative impacts on all countries. Of course, in the era of globalization and information, the growing communication and understanding among countries were the positive factors for the world development.
Following the lecture, Pro. Marchetti answered questions posed by students. When explaining the concept of “city-state”, he said that the large cities would play a more and more important role in the global politics by leveraging their comprehensive influence. The lecture is about the political structure of the world today and provides some guidance to the teachers and students.
In the end, President of the CFL Yan Guodong met with Pro. Marchetti. Both sides made discussion on the possibility of establishing cooperation programs.
