Nkers excelled in the finals of the 22nd English-Speaking Contest for College Students in Tianjin and the "FLTRP · Guocai Cup" National English-Speaking Contest Tianjin Division 2019

From November 2nd to 3rd, 2019, the finals of the 22nd English-Speaking Contest for College Students in Tianjin and the FLTRP • Guocai Cup National English-Speaking Contest Tianjin Division 2019, marking Tianjin University Foreign Language Discipline Competition 2019, came to an end successfully at Tianjin University. Within the two days, 79 contestants from 30 universities in Tianjin gathered to compete with each other.

This competition is sponsored by Tianjin Municipal Commission of Education, University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee in Tianjin and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, organized by the College of Foreign Language and Literature at Tianjin University, and co-organized by other universities.

The contest is divided into two parts: the semi-finals and the finals. In the first phase, the contestants needed to give a speech on My Big Story in 2049and answer questions posed by judges. They went straight to the point of the topic in fluent speeches, relating the fate of the individual with that of the nation in 30 years. Their performances yielded good results from judges.

After three rounds of semi-finals, 21 contestants advanced to the finals in which impromptu speeches and questions on cultural knowledge were added for the examination of their all-round abilities. The previous trials turned out to be their warm-up match for the more challenging contest. As a result, they made great breakthroughs in terms of the speech fluency and manners on the stage. In the impromptu speech session, faced with randomly selected topics, the contestants had to brainstorm ideas expressed with orderly organized diction and speak them out fluently in a limited time. The Q and A session covered four multiple-choice questions, which required the contestants to give a quick answer. This not only discerns the extent of the contestants’ knowledge, but also ensures and the objectivity of the game.

There were 3 special prizes, 4 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 8 third prizes in the speech contest. The winners of the special prize would participate, representing the city of Tianjin, in the national finals.

In the end, the contestants from the NKU outperformed others. Hou Jingchuan from the School of Zhou Enlai Government, Wang Zhiyi, Rao Jia and Zhang Jiayi from the Foreign Language College irrespectively won the first prize, first prize, the second prize and the third prize. Hou Jingchuan would participate in the finals. Wish Hou Jingchuan excellent performance for the NKU. Shen Haibo, as the tutor of him, is a sophisticated teacher with many years’ education. Hou Jingchuan is expected to express the audience with his outstanding linguistic proficiency and the education of the NKU.

At the same time, the awards for the English Writing and Reading Competition Tianjin Division were also announced. In the writing competition, Liu Lin from the CFL won the first prize in Tianjin and in the reading competition, Hou Yaolin from the School of Business and Liang Ningjing from the CFL won the First Prize in Tianjin. Wu Yifan from the CFL and Liu Yuanjie from the School of Economics won the second and the third prize.

The Department of Public English Teaching, for its active and order arrangement, won the honorary title of the 22nd College Students English Speech Contest Organization in Tianjin for the NKU.
