Teachers and students in CFL have made full use of their specialty on language to devote themselves to promoting China’s economic and social development in different aspects by action, based on the concept of talent cultivation of “Foreign Language Specialty, Cultivation of Humanity, Vision of Internationality, Tie to China, and Nankai Characteristics” and the objective of talent cultivation of “Training more staffs involved in foreign affairs, researchers of international issues, practitioners of civilizational exchange and providers of language services for the country”.
Serving foreign affairs by language edges; In order to contribute to the public and using the edges on language to serve China’s economic and social development, teachers and students in CFL work proactively to dedicate in foreign affairs, bridging the communication between Chinese enterprises and foreign enterprises, prompting the exchange and cooperation. In September, 2019, teachers and students from Italian Department of NKU offered interpretation services for the “2019 Sino-Italian SME Economic and Trade Cooperation Matchmaking Conference”. During the conference, they perfectly demonstrated NKers’ proficiency on language, proceeded to improve their skills and comprehensive competence by practices, and gave a unique contribution made by NKers to the international exchange with professional language skill.
Studying international issue coordinated with national policy; National and Regional Research Center was founded in CFL, which aims at providing language talent needed in enlarging the scale of reform and opening-up and promoting the “Belt and Road Initiative” of which language has already become the prerequisite, making our own contribution and giving positive response to the national policy. The Research Center focuses on the international issue study and provides service for the reform and opening-up business in Tianjin. Relying on the leadership of Professor Yan Guodong, the head of the Center and the dean of CFL and the edge on language, the Center works to conduct researches in terms of the culture, politics and the relationship with China among the United States, Russia Federation, Japan, French, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Italy, contributing numerously to the construction of double first class discipline in NKU and Chinese reform and opening-up.
Offering language service in accordance with the needs; What teachers and students from CFL always keep in mind is the concept of “Knowing China as well as serving China”. Therefore, they offer language service according to the needs from society and make contribution to China’s economic and social development and international cultural exchange. During their spare time, they work proactively to attend a variety of big conferences and offer interpretation, such as 2019 World Intelligence Congress, 2019 Development Trend Prospect & Analysis Summit Forum in Meat Import Trade, 2019 “InnoAlliance” Germany China Innovation Competition, and THE-China Universities Forum. Liu Yang, a teacher from Russian Department of CFL, who was the Russian host of 2018 “China-Russia Teenager Ice Hockey Match” with President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin present, stated that: “I had a strong feeling of the friendship between China and Russia when I saw the heads of these two countries communicating harmoniously and interacting with players and audience frequently and I was so proud that I could contribute to the match and the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ by using my language skill”.
Bridging international exchanges and inheriting Chinese culture; In order to respond to the call of cultural construction initiated by the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese government, to build strong cultural confidence and to help socialist culture to flourish, teachers from CFL have devoted themselves to the exchange between China and other countries, facilitating the mutual development of culture in different countries. Professor Hui Cuie from Translation Department has translated Peter Watson’s masterpiece Ideas: A History from Fire to Freud, which set an excellent example for transmitting liberal arts and improving public humanistic quality. Professor Li Li and deputy professor Li Chunjiang from English Department are respectively appointed as the Chinese dean of Confucius Institution of Glasgow University and University of Minho, making their own contributions to sparking the cultural, economic and social interaction between China and Britain, China and Portugal, transmitting outstanding traditional Chinese culture and enlarging Chinese culture’s competence and influence, through Mandarin teaching class and Chinese culture popularization.
It is reported that the international exchanges have ben frequently held by CFL of NKU, as “Nankai-Oxford-Birmingham-Glasgow” World Top University Camp has also drawn lots of students from CFL to participate. During the camp, the students volunteers from CFL have fully demonstrates the spirit of CFL of NKU and the foreign students and officers who had an overall gaze on China’s magnificent sceneries have spoken highly of China and NKU, stating that they will continue to popularize great Chinese culture to others when returning to their homelands. As for the students and teachers of CFL, they will spare no effort to serve China as knowing China better to promote the social and economic development in China.
