On November 9th, the 70th Anniversary of Translation Forum since the founding of New China and the 2019 Annual Conference for Translators Association of China, sponsored by the China Foreign Languages Bureau and organized by the Translators Association of China, were held in Beijing. Prof. Wang Hongyin from the Department of English won the honorary title of Senior Translator.
Representatives from China’s state organs and large multinational enterprises, institutions of higher learning and research, and associations of all sectors from the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Cuba, South Korea, Japan, Myanmar, Vietnam and the wider world attended the meeting. 77 experts in translation were awarded the title of Senior Translator, of which 16 focused on English.
Wang Hongyin, his pseudonym Zhu Mo, was born in Huayin of Shaanxi Province. He works as a professor at the NKU, deputy director of Translation Research Center, tutor of doctoral students focusing on English language and literature, director of the postdoctoral station, specially-term professor entitled Western Scholar. He was once appointed as member of the College English Teaching Steering Sub-Committee of under the Ministry of Education, member of the National Masters’ Degree in Translation (MTI) Education Steering Committee, and vice chairman of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC). He is now chairman of the Chinese Cultural Classics Translation Research Association, a director and superiority expert of Translators Association of China, a standing director of China Association for Intellectual Communication, a director of Translators Association of China (Tianjin), a member of the disciplinary review group of the Tianjin Council Academic Degree Committee, Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Humanities (English) and an artistic advisor of International Chinese Poetry. In terms of scholarship, based on cross-cultural studies (psychology, communication studies) and comparative studies (philosophy, linguistics, literature), he is now mainly engaged in translation teaching and research (anthology of Chinese masterpieces in English translation and theoretical studies of translation) and comparative studies in humanities and social sciences (comparative literature and culture) and literary translation criticism, and publishing a small number of new poems and prose works. The fields covered Kung-sunLungTzu, Twenty-Four Poems, A Dream of Red Mansions, Quotations from Shi Tao Painting, as well as the study of Wu Yan and Mu Dan. He has published monographs on translation theories, The Interpretation of Chinese Traditional Classic Translation Theories, essays Paradise Part: Notes on the Traveling to America, Zhu Mo's Poems, Zhu Mo's Poems Sequel. Besides he also explores the folk operas Orchid Flowers, folk songs and translated Northwest Echoes, newly edited Shakespeare’s plays Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Altogether he has published 70 books and published more than 100 papers.
The Annual Conference of the Translators Association of China is the annual occasion celebrated by Chinese translators. It becomes the crucial platform for people in China who work in the field of translation and language services to communicate and collaborate, attracting more and more peers around the world to get involved. The successful conclusion of the conference will help us to holistically recall the journey and progresses we have made in translation, to guide the translators in China to conduct their studies with general CPC and government policies at its core, and make greater contribution to improving our capacity for engaging in international communication and constructing the system of international communication.
