On April 22, one theme activity in name of “A hundred Alumni Lectures Paying Tribute to the 100th Anniversary of the NKU”-- “Jiye Forum” lecture three was held in the lecture hall 111 of the CFL. Mr. Liu Shuyong, alumnus of the Department of Russia (1961), chief researcher of the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme at the Lingnan University, deputy dean of the Hong kong Local Records Office and associate editor of the journal The Comprehensive History of Hong Kong, returned to the NKU and delivered a lecture on the “NKer and the Return of Hong Kong--Premier Zhou and His Witness to Hong Kong’s Return”.
The participants were Zou Yujie, secretary of the Party Committee of the college; Ma Hongqi, vice president of the college; the aged teacher Cao Zhongde, Zhang Guizhen, Jin Minyi, Xiao Futang, the principle Li Qinghe and Li Hongjie that had retired and students and teachers of the CFL.
To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the NKU, Liu Shuyong donated several volumes of his books to the “Museum of College History”. And in return, Zou Yujie, in behalf of the college, granted the donation certificate and the centennial souvenir bandage to him.
Mr Liu Shuyong, first of all, gave a brief introduction to the relationship between Premier Zhou Enlai and Hong Kong--Premier Zhou and central government’s policy towards Hong Kong, and the story happening between Premier Zhou and the University of Hong Kong. He added that Premier Zhou played a vital role in helping Chairman Mao Zedong to formulate the policies towards Hong Kong. What’s more, Premier Zhou also made great effort to the economic development of Hong Kong, improve the well-being of the people and people-to-people exchanges between mainland and Hong Kong.
In addition, Mr. Liu Shuyong recalled his memory of his study and life in the NKU when he showed some pictures--one: listening to the English tap in the 5-floor Department of Foreign Languages; two: studying in the classroom of the Main Building; three: the whole class rehearsing performances for the National Day in front of the Large Hall. With much gratitude to the school and his teachers, he said that the 8 years’ learning laid a solid foundation for his knowledge and his thought. As furthermore, he encouraged students to enjoy life and treasure the college time as well as to master professional knowledge and set up goals.
In the end, alumnus Liu shared with students the changes to his life brought by the policy of the reform and opening up and some moving stories about him and the return of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Local Records. He ended the lecture with the utterance “For the celebration of the 100th Anniversary and education of the NKU”. Of all the students who gained a lot from the lecture, graduates of 2018 class Cheng Hang said, “ I am deeply impressed by his historical responsibility. What we should do is to take the responsibility of the NKer and hold the sense of mission”.
It was reported that Mr. Liu Shuyong was once a student focusing on the Russian Language and Literature in the Department of Foreign Languages of the NKU and then a graduate of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. After leaving school, he worked as a researcher on the Chinese contemporary history in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, deputy director of History of Sino- foreign relations Office and director of the project of Hong Kong History. Back in 1997, as the counselor of some CCTV’s major feature films as Vicissitudes of Hong Kong, One Hundred Years of Hong Kong and One Hundred Questions for Hong Kong, the planner and speechwriter for the History and Development of Hong Kong photo exhibition organized by the State Council and guest host of the special coverage “The 72 hours’ Return of Hong Kong” in the CCTV News, he participated in the live show and witnessed the historical moment of Hong Kong’s return to China.
