As the 100th anniversary of NKU was approaching in about 200 days, we have launched an activity to tell the history of NKU in Chinese and English, whose theme is “Memorizing the 100-year History & Shaping NKU Spirits”. On the afternoon of March 28th, its opening ceremony was held in Yan Fansun & Zhang Boling Memorial Park, which was attended by the members of 2018 masters’ first Party Branch and the 7th-and 8th-grade students from Nankai Rixin International School. This activity, together with the visit to the Theme Exhibition of NKU’s 100-year History, had been arranged to spread our university’s school motto, school spirit, teaching style and studying atmosphere from a brand-new and international perspective. We hope that our school motto “Dedication to public interests, acquisition of all-around capability, and aspiration for progress with each day” can inspire our NKUers to take serving the country into consideration in the pursuit of their goals and try to bring glory to our university.

The translation team organized by the College of Foreign Languages is composed of a group of postgraduates, whose aim is to tell the stories and spread the spirits of our university under the theme of “Memorizing the 100-year History & Shaping NKU Spirits”. All the members have made the best of what they have learned to complete the translation within one month or so, during which they had more than 10 gatherings to discuss how to solve the difficulties they had encountered, and organized mutual proofreading among small groups and teams. Sometimes they even abandoned their completed translation and started over again. Finally, three months’ work paid off, and they finished the third draft of translation and its proofreading. The final draft will be accomplished before this summer holiday and then be compiled into a book soon.

The storytelling team showed over 180 students around our campus, telling them the stories of some important figures and scenic spots in Chinese & English. These 7th- and 8th- grade students came from Nankai Rixin International School and were led to explore the 100-year history of NKU, in which so many figures and scenic spots had witnessed what happened to NKU and how it survived those wars and hardships. They said that “we have a much deeper understanding of NKU spirits through the two activities. Especially, the three questions put forward by Zhang Boling, old principal of NKU, was extremely thought-provoking and we are really touched by the patriotism in NKU spirits. whenever and wherever, our answers will always be the same: We are Chinese, we love China and we wish China to be good!”

Then the student representatives lay bunches of flowers before the statue of Zhang Boling and bowed in homage to him to show their respect to our old principal. All the teachers and students present at the ceremony listened to the story of principal Zhang and paid tribute to his glory. Then the students assembled together to sing the song My Country and Me in the accompaniment of violin, and its beautiful lines swung in the air “My Country and me, cannot be separated for even a minute. Whenever I am, I will sing out my love for her.” The song was so beautiful and touching that the others joined the chorus, singing out their love and best wishes to our mother country from the bottom of our heart.

It was reported that the translation team and storytelling group of the College of Foreign Languages were highly praised by the Propaganda Department of Party Committee and the Research Center of School History of NKU. On this opening ceremony, the vice president of the Propaganda Department, the director of the center, the principal of Rixin International School and the party secretary of the College of Foreign Languages delivered their speeches one by one and expressed their expectations on the NKU students, which would inspire them to work much harder and move forward faster.

The translation team will continue to revise and compile the translation while the storytelling is trying to tell the stories of NKU to more and more people and spreading NKU spirits into more corners around the world.
