Nankai Students Won the Final in the "21st Century Cup" English Speech Contest in Tianjin

On December 2nd, the final of the 24th 21st Century Coca-Cola Cup National English Speech Contest held by China Daily was held at the Civil Aviation University of China. The competition attracted outstanding students from all over the city to participate in the competition. After fierce competition, Wang Zhiyi, a 2017 English major at the College of Foreign Languages of our university, and Lin Xiying, a 2016 translation major student, stood out and won the first prize of the Tianjin runner-up and the Tianjin first prize.

The competition is divided into three parts: the theme speech, the impromptu speech and the judge's question. The theme of the keynote speech is “Reform and Opening up—A personal perspective”. The contestants closely follow the theme and demonstrate their English speaking ability with fluent oral and meticulous thinking. In the impromptu speech, the players face the randomly selected speech topic. Actively think and demonstrate comprehensive humanistic qualities within a limited time. During the questioning session of the judges, the contestants answered questions and gave insights on the questions raised by the judges. Throughout the game, the audience felt the solid language skills of the players, and also experienced the depth and broad vision of the players. The applause continued during the four-hour game.

In the end, Wang Zhiyi and Lin Xiying, undergraduates of the College of Foreign Languages of our university, won the runner-up in Tianjin and the first prize in Tianjin respectively. Among them, Wang Zhiyi will represent the Tianjin region in March next year to participate in the final of the 24th 21st Century Coca-Cola Cup National English Speech Contest.

It is reported that since the founding of the 21st Century Cup National English Speech Contest, as a traditional project in the English education sector in China, it has received strong support and active participation from experts from the teachers and students from whole nation and the English education community.
