On November 23, Professor Zhao Yanchun of Shanghai University visited the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University to give a lecture entitled “Whether Overseas Sinology Is Competent for the Translation of Chinese Classics”. The lecture was presided over by Lv Shisheng, the director of the Research Center of the Chinese Culture International Communication and the doctoral tutor. The teachers and students from the translation major listened to the lecture.
Starting from the traditional Chinese culture, Professor Zhao Yanchun explored the supernaturality of Chinese culture, pointing out the bias of translation of its core conceptual terms and taking examples to reflect the current status of the English system of Chinese cultural terminology and the specific improvement of space and his personal thinking and exploration raising some doubts about the translation propositions and works of the overseas Sinology and giving counter-evidence from the philosophical and linguistic aspects.
After the lecture, the teachers and students fully exchanged views with Professor Zhao Yanchun on the current situation of overseas Sinology and the historical inheritance of the translation of Chinese classics of the Sinologists.
Zhao Yanchun occupies multiple positions in various institutions: the professor of Shanghai University, the director of the Research Center of the Chinese Cultural Translation of Shanghai University, the editor of Translating China-an international academic journal as well as the director of the Center for Chinese Cultural Translation and Communication at the Beijing Language and Culture University, a member of the Academic Committee of the International Society of East and West, a member of the Editorial Board for Lingual, Literary, and Cultural Translation of Taiwan University of Political Science, Vice President of the Chinese Language Education Research Association, Executive Chairman of the Bilingual Society of Pre-Qin History, Adjunct Professor of Sun Yat-Sen University, Adjunct Professor of China Agricultural University, Visiting Professor of Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Visiting Professor of Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, a member of the Academic Committee of the Mericet University in India.
