Professor Hu Kaibao, Dean of School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, held an academic lecture

Recently, Professor Hu Kaibao, Dean of School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiaotong University, was invited to visit the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University to give an academic lecture and make in-depth exchanges on the construction of foreign language disciplines. On the morning of November 23, Zou Yujie, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Foreign Languages, Yan Guodong, Dean of the college, Wang Kai and Jiao Yanting, Vice Deans of the college and Professor Miao Jv, Director of the Center for Translation Studies, attended the meeting.

As the dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiaotong University and a doctoral tutor, Professor Hu Kaibao has made outstanding achievements in the fields of corpus translation, translation and ideology and translation and the Chinese image and he has published many academic papers in international journals such as Perspectives and domestic CSSCI domestic journals as well as many academic monographs.

On the afternoon of November 23, Prof. Hu Kaibao gave a lecture to the teachers and students of the College of the Foreign Languages of Nankai University on the dissemination and acceptance of the English translation of the the Chinese Dream in America and England. The conference was presided by Professor Miao Jv who is the director of the Research Center and Professor of Talents at Nankai University.

In the lecture, Prof. Hu Kaibao took the English versions of “Chinese Dream” and “China dream” as examples to enable students to fully understand the dissemination and reception of them in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States, further pointing out the problems existing in the spread of the Chinese political discourse; combined with the problems in spreading of political terminology, Prof. Hu, using critical discourse theory,  further presented the influence of ideology on the dialogue, the reaction of discourse to ideology, and how the two originated from social structure and power relationships and how to serve them; he also introduced the research method based on corpus research that searched the Chinese Dream in the news report corpus of the British and American mainstream media and extracted the sentences containing Chinese Dream to analyze the  high-frequency vocabulary features in collocation with the Chinese Dream and their spreading trends . Professor Hu Kaibao provided a good example of research for the students.

Many people attended the lecture, and the atmosphere was good with enthusiastic response. The students from the College of Foreign Languages spoke actively and raised their own questions. They actively exchanged ideas with Professor Hu Kaibao and Professor Hu Kaibao gave detailed answers one by one.
