2018 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Public Writing and Reading Contest Was Successfully Held in Tianjin

On October 27th, 2018, “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Public Writing and Reading Contest was successfully held in Peiyangyuan Campus of Tianjin University. Nearly 200 contestants from more than 20 universities in Tianjin participated in the competition. Ten contestants from our university were sent to participate in the rematch. Students who won the special prize would represent Tianjin in the national finals and show the English excellence of Tianjin students in the national competition.

The writing competition and the reading competition were held at 8:30-10:30 and 13:00-15:30 respectively. The contest selected topics that were familiar and interesting to college students. The content was rich and diverse, and it was close to learning, academics, life and work. The writing contest required participants to complete a 300-500 words of Expository Writing and a 600-800 words of Narrative Writing. The English writing competition required students to have strong language application ability and comprehensive knowledge. It also required difficult training projects which could improve the English writing level of contemporary college students and enhance their thinking ability. Reading contest questions included objective questions and subjective questions, namely, Read and Know, Read and Reason, Read and Question, Read and Read (Read and Create). These four modules comprehensively examined the contestants' reading breadth, information acquisition ability, analysis and judgment ability, logical reasoning ability and extraction ability step by step through a clever design.

After the competition, the Tianjin Competition Organizing Committee conducted a review through a combination of systematic review and manual review. The FLTRP provided iTEST as a service support, assisting experts in performance evaluation and data analysis. The jury composed of the excellent teachers from various universities in Tianjin read and scored the compositions through the online system. The organizing committee integrated the results of the jury and the system as the final evaluation results of the contestants. This form not only improved the efficiency of the competition, but also guaranteed the fairness of the competition. It would also provide new ideas for the evaluation of English writing and reading in colleges and universities.

In the end, Li Xiaoyi from the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, Mao Qi from Nankai Business School, and Kong Wenjie from Tianjin University won the Tianjin Special Prize for Reading Competition. Kong Yankun from the College of Foreign Languages of Nankai University and Cai Wenting and Wang Xiaona from Tianjin University won the special prize in the Tianjin Writing Competition. They would participate in the national finals in behalf of Tianjin and displayed the English excellence of Tianjin college students in the national competition.

It is reported that in Tianjin reading competition, Wu Zhuo and Chen Yumeng of the School of Economics of our university won the first prize and the third prize. In Tianjin writing competition, Liu Yifan and Li Xiaoyi of the College of Foreign Languages of our University won the second prize, and Chen Zhijie of the College of Chemistry of our university won the third prize.
