On June 1, 2018, Associate Professor Yang Lin, Head of Italian Language and Ms. Hu Jing, Head of Portuguese Language, attended the 2nd National Seminar on the Discipline Construction of Non-Universal Languages at the University of International Business and Economics. The conference was sponsored by the Non-Universal Language Teaching Research Association of China and organized by the University of International Business and Economics. More than 70 experts, professors, and academic leaders of 19 non-universal language majors in 35 colleges and universities attended the conference.
After listening to the speeches in the morning, Yang Lin and Hu Jing respectively made speeches at the two branch sessions in the afternoon. Yang Lin spoke at the second session with the topic of “ Innovative Models of Cultivating Talents for Regional and National Research - Nankai University's 'Universal + Non-universal' Undergraduate Talent Cultivation Project” to introduce its meaning, content, characteristics, advantages, receptions, problems and measures, fully displaying all aspects of this new project initiated by our school in September 2017, which she believed that this training model was a kind of in-depth compounding and showed the characteristics of talent cultivation in a college foreign languages of a comprehensive university. Her speech caused widespread interest and heated discussions.
Hu Jing introduced the language composition of the College of Foreign Languages of our university at the first session, introduced the non-universal language majors, and focused on the education of Portuguese major, the goal of talents cultivation and the challenges. Unlike the universities feature with languages, Hu Jing believed that the construction and development of non-universal languages in comprehensive universities must be treated properly. In the end, Hu Jing expressed her thanks to the organizing committee and considered it a good opportunity to communicate with and learn from other universities.
It is reported that our university established two more non-common language majors in 2017– Italian and Portuguese. In 2018, our university became a member of the the Non-Universal Language Teaching Research Association of China.
