On April 29, Professor Cui Gang, PhD supervisor from Tsinghua University made an academic lecture at Room 139 of the CFL, which was also the 220th lecture of the Postgraduate Academic Weekend.
The lecture was chaired by Professor Zhang Wenzhong, one of the members of the ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and also PhD supervisor and the Director of the English Department of the CFL.
PhD supervisor Professor Li Bing, linguistics students from the CFL, and some teachers and students from Tianjin University and Tianjin University of Technology, attended the lecture.
The topic of Professor Cui Gang’s lecture was “Linguistic Study of Aphasia”. He introduced first different types of aphasia in terms of direct and visual diagram of brain structure, such as Broca, Wernicke, and commissural aphasia. Then he discussed, from the perspectives of synchronic and diachronic of structuralism and general linguistics, how to describe and interpret different levels of aphasia in language barrier.
As a linguist who has social responsibility and humanistic concern, Professor Cui Gang also presented his linguistic study on aphasia, which has an important theoretical meaning in the research of neural basis of language and practical application value for the rehabilitation of language function of aphasia. His lecture aroused greatly the academic interest of the teachers and students at the time.
Professor Cui Gang dedicates to academic pursuits and has a great knowledge in linguistics. His original view, together with his humor, encouraged the attendees’ interactive response. At the end of the lecture, Professor Zhang Wenzhong summarized the interesting lecture and encouraged the attendees to carry out research persistently, in the aim of extracting potential inspiration from linguistic phenomenon and doing their own research well.
